Because people think that since it doesnt belong to them that it can always be taken away from them or someone else will fix it if they miss treat it.
I, as a socialist, am not entirely opposed to private propery but if we could extend the care that people show for their own things to everything in society we wont need to define everything as his, hers or theirs.
