Day 308 - 28 Nov 96 - Page 03

messages on it, but, although I heard what Mr. Nicholson
said, it does appear to me to be, in any terms, a different
       leaflet.

MS. STEEL: Thank you. OK. Paragraph 14 on page 19, I have
       dealt with the fact that we did not ignore the letters;
that the first one, there is no evidence that we saw it.

Also, I just wanted to make a point on this, that in terms
of my knowledge about that letter the only thing that
I read about that letter or heard about that letter was
what was stated in the Peace News article; and I think
I did say this when I was giving evidence, that in the
Peace News article about Veggies it stated London
Greenpeace had replied to that letter and that, you know,
McDonald's had then not done anything about it -- the
indication being that it was all sort of an attempt by
McDonald's to scare London Greenpeace into apologising, but
when London Greenpeace stood up to them they then backed
down. That is the inference of the article in Peace News,
and that was my only knowledge about that letter in 1984.
If I did not say this in evidence, then you have to ignore
       that, but .....

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Well .....

MS. STEEL: I cannot actually remember. I know that I missed
some things out when I was going through the evidence,
basically because it was an extremely difficult task to say
everything that I felt was important.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It appears to be about two years before you
       got involved.

MS. STEEL: Three years, yes; four years, in fact -- sorry.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Maybe I am confusing you with Mr. Gravett,
but I thought it was -- was it not 1987 that you
       started -----

MS. STEEL: In 1987, I went to a few meetings, but I did not
       get -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: 1988. Well, it was about three years before
       then ---

MS. STEEL: Yes, I suppose it is December.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: -- according to the evidence I have heard.

MS. STEEL: I suppose the letter was (inaudible). Then,
obviously, the second letter we replied by filing a
defence; and I have said that already.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MS. STEEL: On page 20 -- now, I just wanted to point out this
contradiction on this page, that at paragraph 20 McDonald's
say -- we are asking them to state all the facts and
matters that they are relying upon in support of the
