“Uncovering and Publishing the History of Pennsylvania's Rusyns”

The state of Pennsylvania was home to fully half of the Carpatho-Rusyn immigrants who came to the U.S. between 1878 and 1939 with over 500 Pennsylvania cities and towns having an organized Rusyn immigrant community.  Except in general terms, the history of Rusyns in Pennsylvania has not been studied in detail.  Richard Custer, a founder of the Carpatho-Rusyn Society and editor of the New Rusyn Times, has researched the history of these Rusyn communities and plans to publish a book on the subject.  He will talk about fascinating discoveries from his research that clearly reveal that Rusyn immigrants in Pennsylvania were not only well aware of and committed to their Rusyn identity, but played integral roles in the development of Rusyn religious and cultural institutions in their homeland.
