C-RS NATIONAL CAPITAL CHAPTER HOLDS GENEALOGY SEMINAR

C-RS members in the greater Baltimore-Washington, DC area gathered Saturday, October 20, 1999 in Kensington, Maryland for an afternoon filled with instruction, tips, and networking on Rusyn genealogy.

C-RS member Tom Peters (Somerville, NJ) presented a comprehensive look at genealogical record sources available to Rusyn Americans, and how to access and interpret them. Members of C-RS’s National Capital chapter covered various experiences and ideas: Larry Krupnak (Silver Spring, MD) spoke about using the National Archives in Washington, DC as well as LDS Family History Library’s new website (www.familysearch.org); Rich Custer (Washington, DC) described the phenomenon of chain migration and outlined published genealogical information from Rusyn fraternal organizations; Megan Smolenyak (Vienna, VA) chronicled her family research which blossomed into a village-descendants newsletter and worldwide reunion in Osturnja, Slovakia; and George Warholic (Rockville, MD) emphasized the value of the Internet for networking, which uncovered sources of information which might have otherwise never been found.

Other National Capital chapter members provided delicious treats & drinks, helped staff the C-RS sales table, and much more. The tremendously positive reaction of those attending heralds strong momentum and great future potential for C-RS’s newest regional chapter.
