Trip to Rusyn Coal Country: Lansford, Pa.

Saturday July 11, 2009

The New York Chapter invites all to join and visit Rusyn Coal Country of Lansford Pa. The trip begins with a tour by parish members of St John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church in Lansford Pa. This is one of the oldest Byzantine Catholic parishes started in 1892. The present church was dedicated in 1911.

Next, the tour continues across town to No.9 Coal Mine. It is the world's oldest continuously operated anthracite coal mine.  Closed in 1972, it now operates tours of the facilities. Learn of its operations and life of the miners by exploring its Museum.  Then take a memorable tour of the mine by riding a coal cart and learning about the miners life below ground. Don't forget to bring a sweater or jacket since the mine is a constant cool 55 degrees.

To refresh and discuss what everyone has seen, the trip stops at the local Palace Restaurant to enjoy the local ethnic foods for lunch before returning home. Join us for a most enjoyable Rusyn summer Saturday.

A van will be available for those who wish not to drive. The price to reserve a seat on the van is $30 ($25 for NJ members). Children reserve seats on the van for half price, $15 ($12 for children of NJ members).  Reservations are based on a first come, first serve basis in view of the limited seating. Please make out your check to 'Carpatho-Rusyn Society NY Chapter'  and send to:

Barbara Dzubak, 16-20 160th Street, Whitestone, NY 11357.  Please include your email address or phone number and which location (below) you wish to obtain the van.  Deadline for seat reservations is Wednesday, July 8, 2009.
