Michael Strank, one of two Marines who died while
raising the flag on Iwo Jima, an image that was captured in an
iconic photograph, will be one of the subjects of a presentation
given by New Jersey Chapter member, Carole Kasenchak. Lesser known,
but equally heroic, was Michael Smollen who survived World War II
and played a key role during the Cold War. Learn about the lives of
these men and other members of Ms. Kasenchak’s family, their
different roles on the world stage and their shared cultural
characteristics.
Ms. Kasenchak, known professionally as Carole Ayn Kathie, has worked for
close to forty years to unravel the mystery of her family. Learn how
the Iwo Jima flag raising impacted the Strank family during World

Continue on Riverview Drive to the traffic light at Valley Road.
Turn right onto Valley Road and proceed to the second traffic light
at Nellis Drive at the Wayne Municipal Complex. Turn left and then
