The NJ Chapter and
the World Film Society of Bergen County Community College will co-host a
showing of the Czech film “Ine Svety – Other Worlds.” The focus of this
documentary is on the eastern region of Slovakia, known as Saris. Saris
lies on the border between Eastern and Western Europe, between the
“rational individualism” of the West and the “expressive emotionality”
of the East. This territory below the eastern Carpathian mountains
developed into a colorful national and religious blend of peoples. The
film follows the so-called globalizing process and its impact on the
individual stories and lives of the inhabitants of Saris, portraying
individuals who represent their own ethnic group – Slovak, Rusyn, Romany
(gypsy) and Jew. The documentary examines the various ways in which
their uniqueness, traditional customs and local knowledge are rapidly
disappearing. Ine Svety won the Audience Award at the 2006 KarlovyVary
Film Festival. For further information, send an E-mail to
jchanda@bergen.edu or call him at (609) 882-4872.
