Introduction

In the previous chapter, the measurement of selected rest frames through visual-inertial nulling was examined as a means to evaluate the sense of presence. In this chapter, the manipulation of selected rest frames is studied as a means to alter the sense of presence. Specifically, this chapter studies the effect of foreground occlusions[*].

The following questions are addressed in this chapter.

1.
Can a foreground occlusion increase reported presence?

2.
Can a performance measure be found for the effect of a foreground occlusion?

Experiment AIIE1 and Experiment AIIE2 sought to measure the effect of a foreground occlusion on reported presence. Research on a performance measure for foreground occlusions is discussed in Appendix C, in reference to inside-out displays.
