In the previous chapter, the measurement of selected rest frames through visual-inertial nulling was examined as a means to evaluate the sense of presence. In this chapter, the manipulation of selected rest frames is studied as a means to alter the sense of presence. Specifically, this chapter studies the effect of foreground occlusions.
The following questions are addressed in this chapter.
Experiment AIIE1 and Experiment AIIE2 sought to measure the effect of a foreground occlusion on reported presence. Research on a performance measure for foreground occlusions is discussed in Appendix C, in reference to inside-out displays.
