SHERI AT THE PALACE
Teddy The Toast At
The Court Of King Tel

NEW Crystal Palace boss Terry Venables is set to stage a summer swoop for one of his favourite footballing sons, Teddy Sheringham, who will fulfill his wish of returning to London by swapping Old Trafford for Selhurst Park in a 2 million deal, on his return from the World Cup.

The England striker, a former Millwall and Tottenham player, has made it known to friends that he would like to come back to the capital, and the word is that he has agreed to join up with Venables at relegated Palace.

Following a promising start to his Manchester United career, Sheri has become unsettled at Old Trafford after finishing his first season at the club, surpisingly, empty-handed. He was also upset by the public criticism about his pre-World Cup partying in Portugal by United director Bobby Charlton.

He has yet to face manager Alex Ferguson over his antics on the Algarve, but strict disciplinarian Fergie is far from happy and when former England coach Venables moved in with his first bid since returning to club football, the United chief gave an immediate yes .

Sheringham has been constantly linked with a move back to London, with West Ham thought to be leading the chase. But Hammers' chief Harry Redknapp has ruled himself out of this particular transfer tussle, even though he is looking to add a striker to his ever-expanding squad.

Tottenham, who many thought might be in for their former skipper, do not appear to be interested in recapturing Sheringham, preferring to use Alan Sugar's millions to try and tempt Argentina's Ariel Ortega or Chile's Clarence Acuna to White Hart Lane.

Spurs chairman Sugar has made 20m available in order to give the club an even chance of domestic honours next season, but it's Director of Football David Pleat and not coach Christian Gross who has hold of the purse strings.

That is sure to cause friction between Pleat and Gross, who will be able to make suggestions concerning transfer targets, but will not see any deals through; Sugar insisting that he concentrates his efforts on training and tactics, after a disastrous season which almost saw Spurs relegated.

Pleat is believed to be interested in Jamaica's teenage wonderkid Ricardo Gardener who made a huge impression in the Reggae Boyz' first World Cup match with Croatia, and is also being tracked by Derby boss Jim Smith

Sugar, who once famously declared he would never buy a 'Carlos Kickaball' is placing enormous faith and responsibility in Pleat who has been told to "travel the world to get the players we need".
