Five Off In Two Games - And
'Stupid' Platini Takes The Blame

THE World Cup took on a startling red hue last night as FIVE players were sent-off and red-faced French legend Michel Platini took the blame.

On Tuesday, France 98 supremo Platini said referees were not enforcing the new FIFA directives strictly enough, with only four red cards shown in the first 20 games. Yesterday World Cup referees appeared to take heed as three were dismissed during South Africa's 1-1 draw with Denmark and two including French captain Zinedine Zidane saw red during the hosts' 4-0 romp against Saudi Arabia. The referees also managed to hand out 14 yellow cards in two eventful Group C clashes.

After seeing three substitutes, Miklos Molnar and Morten Wieghorst for Denmark, as well as South Africa's Alfred Phiri, dismissed in Toulouse, Celtic's Danish defender Marc Rieper fumed: There were no real bad tackles, yet we managed 10 yellow cards and three reds which is ridiculous.

"The referee lost the game totally, but a lot of that is due to Michel Platini, who came out after the first matches and said the referees have been much too weak.

"It was ridiculous for Platini to speak out because the standard of refereeing before now has been very good. It was a very stupid comment."

OFF!
Rieper added: "What Platini wants kills football. Any more games like this will ruin the World Cup and you have to blame Michel Platini for a large part of that.

Ironically, Platini's France suffered in the evening encounter against Saudi Arabia. Though they clinched their place in the last 16 with an emphatic 4-0 win the biggest of the tournament so far they had Juventus star Zidane sent off for violent conduct after 70 minutes when he appeared to stamp on Faud Amin. He now faces a ban of at least one match.

The Saudis paid an even higher price they played most of the game with 10 men, after having Mohammed Al-Khilaiwi dismissed just 19 minutes into the match for a mis-timed tackle. Defeat in Paris last night means they are the first nation mathematically ruled out of France 98 so far.

France coach Aime Jacquet, who once dropped Eric Cantona for indiscipline, said: "Zidane deserved to be sent off because you cannot behave like that on the football pitch.

"Players have to exercise more control and discipline."

In 22 matches so far, 84 yellow cards and nine red cards have been issued.
