  20. Welcome to Symantec's Trial version of Visual Page for Windows 95 and 
  21. Windows NT. Please take a few minutes to read this file, 
  22. which contains the latest information regarding this release.

  28. =================================================================
  29. IBM PC or 100% compatible
  30. Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 
  31. 486-66Mhz or above
  32. VGA (256 colors are required for previewing Java Applets)

  39. III.  Installation Notes
  40. =================================================================

  42. Installing from Symantec's Web Site
  43. -----------------------------------
  44. If installing from our Web site, please copy the downloaded files 
  45. into an empty directory.  To expand the installation files, run 
  46. the executable from File > Run or at a DOS prompt.  Once 
  47. expanded, run SETUP.EXE to install Visual Page.  
  48.  
  49. If you choose not to download the full version of the trial
  50. you may at any time, opt, to download individual supporting 
  51. files, such as the Tour (Getting Started).  Place these 
  52. supporting files; e.g. tour.bin, into the directory containing 
  53. the installer and then run Setup.exe.
  54.  
  55. Note: When downloading individual components (*.bin)
  56. Netscape Communicator may incorrectly append an extension 
  57. to the file name.  Once the file has been downloaded to your 
  58. computer please rename the file to contain the appropriate 
  59. extension; e.g. help.bin, tour.bin, or template.bin.
  60.  
  61. In the web release we have included the User's Guide and Getting Started 
  62. manuals in PDF format which is optimized for printing, because of this
  63. some images may appear blurry when viewed through Acrobat Reader.

  65. As with any new software, please install Visual Page into a 
  66. clean directory.

  69. Installing Starbase's Versions Software
  70. ---------------------------------------
  71. An evaluation copy of Starbase's Versions source control software 
  72. has been included on the Visual Page CD or as a separate download 
  73. from our Web site. During the installation process you will be 
  74. prompted for a serial # and key. Click the Next button to continue. 
  75. You will be asked if you want to install an evaluation copy. Select Yes.

  85. Q: How do I run QuickTime Movies?
  86.  
  87. A: In order to run QuickTime Movies in Symantec Visual Page, you 
  88.    will need to obtain the QuickTime software from Apple Computer,
  89.    Inc. At the time this file was written, the QuickTime files 
  90.    were available at http://quicktime.apple.com/sw/qtwin32.html.

  94. Q: I have 256 color video capabilities but my applets do not 
  95.    appear in preview mode.  
  96.  
  97. A: It is not uncommon for vendors of Java applications to
  98.    install any supporting virtual machine (VM) or Just-In-Time 
  99.    (JIT) compiler files into the system directory.  Check your 
  100.    Windows and system directories (system32 for NT) for 
  101.    JAVAI.DLL and AWT.DLL.  Rename the file(s) to *.SAV and 
  102.    relaunch Visual Page.

  105. Q: How can I determine why my applet won't run in preview mode?
  106.  
  107. A: Place the HTML file in preview mode. Select Show Java Console 
  108.    from the View menu. All Java errors are displayed within this window.  
  109.    In many cases, it is likely that Visual Page is unable
  110.    to find one or more supporting class files for the applet.  This 
  111.    may occur if your applet contains a custom component. Create an 
  112.    environment variable for the Classpath variable. Point the 
  113.    Classpath variable to the zip file that contains the class file.
  114.    
  115.    In Windows 95 place a statement similar to the one below in the 
  116.    AUTOEXEC.BAT:
  117.  
  118.    Set Classpath=C:\directoryname\classfile.zip.
  119.  
  120.   
  121.   In Windows NT Choose Start > Control Panel > System. Select the 
  122.   Environment Tab in the System Properties dialog box. Enter the 
  123.   word Classpath in the Variable field. Enter the path to the zip 
  124.   file containing the classes in the Value field.

  128. V.  Known Problems and Workarounds  
  129. ================================================================
  130. o   List boxes and drop down lists do not function in Preview mode.
  131.  
  132. o   Cancelling a remote file download leaves a zero byte file.
  133.  
  134. o   When converting 24 bit (true color or 16 million color)
  135.     BMP files to GIF files, the palette may not be saved with the 
  136.     image.  As a result the image may appear as a black square.  
  137.     We recommend you manually convert the image with an external
  138.     program and then add the GIF to your HTML file. 
  139.  
  140. o   Columns that span across multiple pages may not appear when 
  141.     printing from the Visual Editor.
  142.  
  143. o   The Printer Setup dialog fails to appear when invoked a second
  144.     time on an invalid or unavailable printer.  To reinstate the 
  145.     dialog you must select a valid printer in the Control Panel 
  146.     before selecting Printer Setup in Visual Page.

  148. o   The entities.htm file is located in the same directory as 
  149.     VPAGE.EXE.
