OCR: (1905-50) KARL GUTHE JANSKY was an American radio engineer who made a discovery that marked the beginning of radio astronomy. While investigating interference on telephone calls, he built a high-quality receiver and with it accidentally detected radiation that he concluded was coming from a stellar source. His discovery of extraterrestrial radio waves allowed the pioneers of radio astronomy to "see" more of the Universe than had been possible with Earth-based optical telescopes. His name lives on in the jansky, the unit of strength of electromagnetic-wave emissions. 1905 Born on October 22 in Norman, Oklahoma. 1928 After studying at the University of Wisconsin, he joins Bell Telephone Laboratories as an engineer.
