  11. LOCAL AREA NETWORKS (CONTINUED INFO.):
  12.        The Future -- Industry experts predict that the number of Local Area
  13. Networks will increase from 80,000 in 1986 to over 205,000 by the end of
  14. this decade.  More than 2,000,000 devices will  be connected by these LANs.
  15. If today's trend continues, computer networks will comprise the majority of
  16. LAN usage.
  17.        The Local Area Networks arena is one of the most volatile in today's
  18. telecommunications industry.  The major issues yet unresolved - transmission
  19. standards and interconnection, and the continued jockeying among players for
  20. dominance almost guarntees that LAN's wil be a topic of interest for the
  21. foreseeable future.

  23. BUSINESS/RESIDENCE ACCOUNT TRACKING:
  24.        Prior to Divesture, an AT&T system provided the operating companies
  25. with a customer-specific analysis tool.  MARC, the Market Analysis of Revenue
  26. and Customers system, offered information on residential customer including
  27. local and long distance usage, telephone equipment and demographic character-
  28. istics.
  29.        MARC was dicontinued at Devesture.  The three US West IDCs are planning
  30. to replace MARC with a system that will provide users with information on
  31. customers' demographics (age, income, household size, etc.), psychographics
  32. (lifestyle and attitudes) and telecommunicatons usage.  The system could be of
  33. use to product managers, forecasters and anyone with a need for customer--
  34. specific information.
  35.        The Business Residence Account Tracking system (BRAT) will consist of
  36. historical information developed by combining usage-sensitive data from CRIS,
  37. central office data (Customer, Touchtone, etc.) and questionnaire data from a
  38. sample of Bell customers.

  40. INTRACALL:
  41.        IntraCall is a new product from Bell offering customers a home
  42. intercom system.  IntraCal is easy to use and customers will not have to
  43. add any equipment to put the product in use.
  44.        A customer uses IntraCall by listening for a dial tone then dialing
  45. their own telephone number.  When a busy signal is received the customer hangs
  46. up the telephone.  All telephones on that line will ring back with a
  47. distinctive ring (two short rings).  When at least two telephones are answered
  48. an intercom path is established.  IntraCall is deactivated when all telephones
  49. have been hung up.

  51.        IntraCall is currently available in specially equipped cental offices
  52. in the 5 NorthWestern Bell states.  This feature will be more available in
  53. the near future.  Most states Bell is charging 2.00 per month.  The local
  54. business office will have information on availability of IntraCall by
  55. location.
  56.    There are some features interactions to be aware of when using IntraCall:
  57.        1)  It will to work while using Three-Way Calling.
  58.        2)  It disables Call Waiting (the calling party will
  59.            hear a busy signal.)
  60.        3)  It will not work if Call Forwaring is activated.
  61.        4)  It will not work with lines in a hunt group.
  62.        5)  LMS charges do not apply to IntraCall.
  63.        IntraCall advantages.  Let's say you want to call a fellow hacker.
  64. IntraCall's special distinctive ring signals other hackers to pick up the phone
  65. nearest them.  You can talk a phreak upstairs, a hacker downstairs, or a
  66. cracker in the garage, all at once if you like.  Anywhere you have an extension
  67. phone an intercom.

  69. POTS AND PANS DEVELOPMENTS:
  70.        POTS is a telecommunications industry acronym meaning "Plain Old Tele-
  71. phone Service."  It is now accompanied, N.W.Syndicate has learned recently,
  72. by PANS, which is "Pretty Advanced New Stuff."...Bell Laboratories patented a
  73. device that will enable a telephone customer to trace a nuisance call.  To
  74. trace a call, a customer would dial a special code number that causes both the
  75. called and calling numbers to be transmitted to a local central office or
  76. police station.
