  14. The Internet Gateway
  15. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  16. The Internet Gateway provides Internet e-mail users with a method of
  17. communication to AT&T Mail.  The Interconnect consists of various private
  18. email networks and uses an addressing format better know as Domain Addressing
  19. Service (DAS).

  21. A domain address consists of a user name, followed by an @ sign and/or % sign
  22. and a domain name, which is usually the system name.

  28. Sending Email to Internet Users

  30. To send email from the AT&T MailService to the Internet community use the UUCP
  31. addressing style.

  37. Translates to:

  41. If you are sending e-mail to an Internet user whose e-mail address may be in
  42. the RFC 822 format (user@domain), you must translate the RFC address before
  43. sending your message to an Internet recipient.

  45.         username@system.domain (Internet user's address)

  47.         internet!system.domain!username (to a UUCP address)
  48.

  50.         username%system2@system.domain (Internet user's address)

  55. Sending Email From The Internet
  56. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  57. To send email to the AT&T Mail Service, Internet users can choose either the
  58. RFC 822 or UUCP addressing style.  The Internet recognizes attmail.com as the
  59. domain identifier for AT&T Mail when electronic messages are sent through the
  60. gateway.  Although many Internet users choose to send e-mail using the RFC 822
  61. addressing style, the UUCP style is also available on many UNIX systems on the
  62. Internet, but not every system supports UUCP.  Below are examples of both
  63. addressing styles:

  77. Although email can be sent through the Internet gateway, surcharged services,
  78. such as Telex, FAX, COD, U.S. Mail, overnight, urgent mail and messages
  79. destined to other ADMDs connected to AT&T Mail are not deliverable.  If you are
  80. an Internet e-mail user attempting to use a surcharged service and are not
  81. registered on AT&T Mail, you will not be able to send your message, and will be
  82. automatically notified.  Below is a list of surcharged services that are
  83. unavailable to Internet users.

  86. *  Telex
  87. *  COD
  88. *  U.S. Mail
  89. *  Overnight
  90. *  Administrative Management Domain (ADMD) Messages

  92. Sending Email to Bitnet Users

  94. To send email to BITNET users from AT&T Mail, enter:

  100. To send email to UUNET users from AT&T Mail via the Internet Gateway, enter:

  104. Internet Restrictions
  105. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  106. The following commercial restrictions apply to the use of the Internet Gateway.
  107.  
  108. *  Users are prohibited to use the Internet to carry traffic between commercial
  109.    (for profit) electronic messaging systems.
  110.  
  111. *  Advertising and soliciting i.e., messages offering goods or services for sale
  112.    or offers of jobs.
  113.  
  114. *  Provision of for-profit service, other than electronic messaging to Internet
  115.    users, is permitted (e.g., database services) if such service is used for
  116.    scholarly research purposes and its costs are borne by individual or
  117.    institutional subscription.
