  1. Crossword Puzzles for Palm OS 1.04

  4. Crossword Puzzles allows you to work on Crossword puzzles on your Palm device.
  5.  
  6. You can get new puzzles on your device in one of three ways:
  7.  
  8. 1) From a Macintosh, use the enclosed conduit to download puzzles each time you
  9.     HotSync your Palm device. Puzzle Pack application to convert downloaded 
  10.     .puz files into a .pdb file that can then be installed on your Palm device.
  11.     Please refer to the file readme.txt enclosed in the PuzzlePack archive.

  13. 2) From a Windows PC, use the enclosed conduit to download puzzles each time you
  14.     HotSync your Palm device. Please refer to the file readme.txt enclosed in the
  15.     Conduit archive.
  16.     
  17. 3) If you're using a Palm VII, you can download new puzzles directly to the device.

  19. Playing a Crossword Puzzle
  20. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  21. To play a puzzle, simply open up Crossword Puzzles. You'll see the puzzisplayed 
  22. onscreen. To play a different puzzle, select "Change Puzzle" from the "Puzzle" menu.

  24. There are several controls along the bottom of the screen. From left to right, these
  25. are:
  26.  
  27. Puzzle Info:     This shows you the title and copyright information on the current 
  28.                 puzzle.
  29.  
  30. Zoom:            Here you can select the zoom level. Some puzzles (19 x 19 and bigger)
  31.                 are harder to read when the whole puzzle is displayed.
  32.                 
  33. Hints:            Tapping and holding this will show the solution of the puzzle.
  34.  
  35. Keyboard:        Tapping this will bring up a floating keyboard with which to enter
  36.                 letters into the puzzle.
  37.                 
  38. Clear:            Tapping this will clear all answers from the puzzle.
  39.  
  40. Switch Clue:    If you're working on a clue, this button will appear (small arrows).
  41.                 Tapping it will switch the orientation of the clue, either to down
  42.                 or across.

  45. To work on a clue, tap the square you want to start with and drag, either across (to
  46. work on an across clue) or down (to work on a down clue). The clue will appear in a
  47. small window (usually at the bottom of the screen).

  49. If you'd like to see a list of all clues, select "All Clues" from the "Puzzle" menu.
  50. Here you'll see a scrollable list of all the clues in the puzzle. You can tap on one
  51. to jump directly to it.

  53. You can beam puzzles to other people with Crossword Puzzles installed. To do this, 
  54. select "Beam Puzzle" from either the Puzzle screen or the "Change Puzzle" screen.

  57. Direct Download using a Palm VII
  58. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  59. If you're using a Palm VII (or Palm III/V with an OmniSky modem) you can download 
  60. puzzles directly over the air. To do this, select "Download Puzzles" from the "Options" 
  61. menu.

  63. Just as above, you will be presented with a list of sites from which to download from.
  64. Tap a site, then tap the "Get" button to download the puzzle. [Note: the Palm VII's 
  65. connection can be a bit flaky at times...if you find yourself waiting more than a minute
  66. for a puzzle to download, try exiting the program and re-entering it and trying again. 
  67. This usually fixes the problem].

  69. The "Discard URL after downloading" checkbox is ignored when using the "Get" button. 
  70. However, URLs entered here will still be fetched during a HotSync (duplicate puzzles
  71. will be ignored).
