From: Quixotic Quest - Sysop of Screaming Alarm Clock, Tri-Cities, WA.
This FAQ has been modified by Surgical Steel [@207.filenet
surgicalsteel@mindspring.com (Surgical_Steel)], since I haven't
seen Quixotic for several releases now....

[ A ] PPP Project for WWIV - and standard PPP Internet Accounts.
/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/
Info: The PPP Project enables sending and receiving WWIV network packets
automatically via a Sysop's standard PPP Internet Mail account and
enables offering Internet Mail and Newsgroups to WWIV BBS Users!
Currently FILEnet is the main Network used for direct routing -
and you can arrange with Servers to Linker or Flink other Nets
to FILEnet.
If you intend to use a different Net as your primary route, then all
of the Servers and Connects have to use the same Net for routing via
the Internet - pending a future PPP Project release that can support
using multiple Nets and routes so that a primary Net won't be needed.
This requires a PPP account. This will not work with an Email-
only account such as Juno (c) tm or other similar accounts.
This can work with many national services. But America Online
(c) tm and proprietary Internet services are not compatible.
Who: The PPP Project is developed by Frank Reid of Eagle's Dare BBS.
1@1160.FILEnet 1@8213.WWIVnet edare@abs.net
Why: Info for unzipping files in sequence to build to current release.
Info to point to docs to read prior to there being a new Help Doc.
How : The PPP Project works with DOS, OS/2, WFW, Win95, and WinNT.
You need KLOSPPPW.ZIP for drivers to run under Windows at this time.
The KLOS drivers will *NOT* work under W3.1.
The PPP Project works with WWIV 4,24a. It can work with WWIV 4.23
with the JAFO13B.MOD which enables swapping the BBS to EMS/XMS for
"network callouts ( because of the large memory requirements of the
Internet communication routines )." [ Text in quotes by "Goose" ].
/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/
[ B ] Getting Started: Info you must have to begin installation.
/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/
********************************************************************
What type of Internet Providers are compatible with the PPP Project?
*********************************************************************
Any Internet Service Provider (ISP) offering a * standard * PPP account.
This includes most ISP's. Due to the account type or the set-up of the ISP
itself ( protocols, PPP config, and their proprietary software ) JUNO and
AOL are not compatible with PPP Project for WWIV. JUNO is not a true ISP.
Unfortunately, AOL does not offer a standard PPP setup at this time.
***************************************************************************
You will need the following information for setting up your NET.INI and
NET.CFG for the PPP Project. Pages 7 and 8 of the FAQ have examples of
what the completed format for the NET.INI and NET.CFG can look like.
***************************************************************************
This information is provided to you by your Internet Service Provider (ISP)
by mail, disks or phone when you join. You can ask their Tech Support, too.
***************************************************************************
An IP number is a numeric address. ie: 255.255.255 instead of somewhere.com
***************************************************************************
[1] Your SMTP host ......... Machine name or IP number for sending mail.
If your SMTP Host uses an old version of sendmail ( software used
by ISP's to send outgoing Internet Mail ), then you may see " SMTP
Socket Failure " reports. Info on a work around is on FAQ page 8.
[2] Your POP or POP3 host .. Machine name or IP number for retrieving mail.
[3] Your Username .......... This is the response to a login: prompt.
When you join - tell your ISP you want a "PPP" connection when you
connect, and not a "Shell" account ( A Shell is like calling a BBS ).
When you login - you might have to use a capital letter before your
username - or you might have to add a string of text before or after
your username - to get a PPP connection instead of a Shell.
Examples: Pusername Busername username@ppp
[4] Your Password .......... This is a response to a password: prompt.
Some ISP's use what is called PAP authentication for login. The following
is the sequence necessary to set up the PAP authentication - by using the
PPPMENU.EXE from the PPPPRJ14.ZIP - [ the text here is by "Goose" ] :
- From the Profile List, select Current
- From the Configure Menu, select Authentication
- From the Authentication Menu, select PAP Only (Note that nothing
seems to happen when this option is selected. This is OK.)
- From the Authentication Menu, select ID and Password. Enter your
userid and password at the prompts.
- Use <Esc> to back out, and select Save and Write NET.CFG when prompted.
[5] Your News Server ... Machine name or IP number for the ISP News Server.
[6] Your Name Server/DNS Number .. Used for the nameserver flag in NET.INI.
If given two, use the primary/first one.
[7] Netmask / Gateway IP numbers .. Your ISP should provide this info, too.
[8] The local number you dial .... The number to call to login to the ISP.

[ C ] Web site info ; archive index ; the order for unzipping files.

The PPP Project Web site is open daily.
On Fridays - from 12 midnight to as late as 9am Pacific time -
the Web site might not be available - as those are the hours
when my ISP updates their systems.
The Web site always has the latest Betas and FAQ's, and it usually has
some additional files. I also update the FILENET.ZIP there very often.
Below are the zips your BBS needs to be current with PPP Project files.
Instructions for installation are in the next section of the FAQ.
These zips ensure that you get all the files until a new PPP Project zip
archive is made that contains all of the latest files in one zipped file.
That might be made available soon - but these zips let you refer back to
the releases as they came out so you'll have a common frame of reference.
PPPPRJ14.ZIP [ 1/5 ] v 1.4. Installation. [ INSTPPP.EXE ].
PPP15B14.ZIP [ 2/5 ] v 1.5. Update, bug fixes. Beta-15.
KLOSPPPW.ZIP [ 3/5 ] Drivers needed for Win31, WFW, Win95, WinNT.
PPP15B33.ZIP [ 4/5 ] v 1.5. Update, enhancements, bug fixes. Beta-33.
FILENET.ZIP [ 5/5 ] FILEnet network. Updated often. Needed only if
you are not already a member of FILEnet.
PPPW-FAQ.DOC - Latest FAQ for the PPP Project ( Quixotic Quest/OnTheFritz )
Needed for installation.
PPP-NEWS.DOC - Latest Newsgroups FAQ for the PPP Project ( Eileen Stone )
Needed for setting up Newsgroups and Internet Mail.
Remember - only the FILENET.ZIP is to be unzipped in your FILEnet dir.
And you only need a FILENET.ZIP if you are not already member of FILEnet.
PPPPRJ14.ZIP is to be unzipped into a temp directory.
The later PPP zips are to be unzipped into \WWIV when you are prompted
to do so in the installation section [ Section D ] of the FAQ.
/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/
[ D ] Installing and Updating PPP Project ( Updates and Betas ).
/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/
This section has been modified / updated by Quixotic Quest ( OnTheFritz )
from a post by Frank Reid on the WWIVnet #1 Sysops Sub.
A. Extract PPPPRJ14 into a temp directory. Run INSTPPP. You *must* have
the information about your ISP handy to complete the installation.
This includes your mail hosts, DNS, netmask, etc.
Information on the info you will need is mentioned on page 2 of
this FAQ in the " Getting Started " section.
B. INSTPPP creates a new network in INIT called PPPNET.
If you are not a member of FILEnet at this time then you must
change PPPnet to FILEnet in your INIT due to a network merger
and name change subsequent to that release. Delete the PPPnet
dir. Create a FILEnet dir and unzip the FILENET.ZIP into it.
If you are already a member of FILEnet and you are installing
the PPP Project - then just remove PPPnet from your INIT after
installation - and then delete the PPPnet directory.
C. Modify the NET.INI created by INSTPPP. There is an example
NET.INI in this FAQ on page 7 that you can print out in order
to see what needs to be added and deleted.
D. Copy any NET.CFG, NET.INI, and PHONE.DAT in \WWIV to a temp dir.
Then extract the update zips to catch up to the current Beta and
the enhanced features and options. This overwrites the executables
from PPPPRJ14 with the latest Beta releases, updates, and corrections.
(1) Extract the contents of PPP15B14 into your BBS main dir.
[ This takes you to the first bug fix. ]
(2) Extract the contents on KLOSPPPW.ZIP into your main BBS dir.
[ This enables running under WFW, Win95, WinNT. ]
(3) Extract the contents of PPP15B33.ZIP into your main BBS dir.
[ This is the most recent Beta as of this edition of the FAQ.
If you pulled a Beta with a number higher than 33 - such as
PPP15B34.ZIP - then use that later edition of the Betas. ]
(4) Now restore the NET.CFG, NET.INI, PHONE.DAT from your temp dir.
E. Test the program. If successful, it will have created (and sent)
an Internet email to Frank Reid with a PPPnet network application. It
is leftover from the old Beta. If you are not yet a member of FILEnet
look in your FILEnet dir for the FBACKHDR.NET file to see the list of
GC's. You can send a FILEnet network app to your GC via Internet Mail
or to their standard WWIV addresses listed in the FILEnet application.
Please do *not* send email to Frank Reid requesting these files
be sent to an Internet account. Eagle's Dare BBS is rarely busy,
and you'll probably have little difficulty in getting connected
and running through the ASV and grabbing the files.
The files are also available at the PPP Project Web site.

[ E ] SMTP Socket errors - bug fixes and suggestions.
/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/
[1] Try setting the SMTPHOST = to it's actual IP number in NET.INI rather
than the text address. Try using the DNS IP number by using it for the
SMTPHOST = flag, too. That helped some systems to correct SMTP errors.
[2] Your ISP may have an old version of sendmail. Sendmail the is software
ISPs use to send outgoing Internet mail. Check the version via telnet.
Example: telnet your.smtp.host 25
Try specifying a different SMTP host by changing the SMTPHOST = flag
so that it points to a SMTP host that uses a newer sendmail version.
/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/
[ F ] Import and Export of Internet Mail and Newsgroups Posts.
/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/
Read the Newsgroups FAQ by "Eileen Stone". Set CLEANUP=Y in NET.INI.
When the BBS calls your ISP - outgoing Internet Mail and Newsgroups
are prepared for sending - and previously received incoming Internet
Mail is placed into User's mailboxes.
After successful callouts for Mail and News ( ONECALL=Y in NET.INI ) or
News ( ONECALL=N and a call to node @32767 ) incoming Newsgroups posts
are tossed to the Newsgroups Subs set in INIT and NEWS.RC.
The example below can be applied to add a line in a LOGON.BAT in \WWIV
so pending Internet Mail also processes whenever a User logs on the BBS.
EXP S32767.NET C:\WWIV\FILENET\ 301 quixotic owt.com FILENET

Beginning with v 1.5 Beta-24 this will be fully automatic.
Continuing the use of this command in logon.bat with later Betas is okay.

*********************************************************************
Sending Internet Mail from the BBS uses this address format / syntax.
*********************************************************************
username@address.domain @32767
username@address.domain (user_name) @32767
*********************************************************
A User's Return Address listed in outgoing Internet Mail.
*********************************************************
Newsgroup posts use Aliases or Handles by default. The REALNAME = flag
in NET.INI controls if Real Names or Aliases are used in Internet Mail.
*******************************************************
Matching incoming Internet Mail to the BBS's User List.
*******************************************************
The PPP Project will match Internet Mail to Real Names and Handles/Aliases.
************************************************************************
A User's Internet Mail Address on a PPP Project BBS will look like this.
************************************************************************
Real Name syntax : sysopusername@yoursite.yourdomain (real_name)
Alias or Handle syntax : sysopusername@yoursite.yourdomain (handle)
Let's say the Sysop's username on his/her Internet Service Provider
(ISP) is joe, the Internet site is mailnow.com, and the BBS user is
(fictional) Timothy Pog (Real Name) or Nevermore ( Alias / Handle ).
Real Name Internet Address on BBS : joe@mailnow.com (timothy_pog)
Alias or Handle Internet Address on BBS : joe@mailnow.com (nevermore)

[ K ] Mail MOD Info ; PPP Development / Support Sub - Host and Gates.
/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/
The BBS can be modded so when Users hit [E] it will look at the address and
route accordingly - so Users won't have to place an @32767 after the normal
address for outgoing Internet Mail messages. The MOD is open to registered
WWIV Sysops and can be requested on the PPP Development / Support sub.
SUB HOST: Eagle's Dare BBS - FILEnet Node 1160 - Sub-Type 2.

**********
BBSLIST.99
**********
You need to create a BBSLIST.99 in your FILEnet directory ( if one does
not exist already ). The contents should look like this...
~848110605
@32767 *999-PPP-NEWS #00300 !$ [-1] "Internet
Newsgroups and Mail"
A line break was inserted for this file. The text following @32767
belongs on one line.
**********
CONNECT.99
**********
In order to callout to node @32767 for Internet Mail and Newsgroups you
need to create a CONNECT.99 in your FILEnet dir. These two lines should
be added when you first create it:
@yourfilenetnodenumber 32767
@32767 yourfilenetnodenumber
*********************************
ADD @32767 TO FILENET CALLOUT.NET
*********************************
Now add node @32767 to your CALLOUT.NET file in your FILEnet directory
with a line similar to this:
@32767 /1 & !20
Key:
@32767 This calls out to @32767 ( Internet Mail and Newsgroups ).
/1 This forces a callout at least once a day.
& This enables bi-directional transfer.
!20 This forces a delay of at least one hour between calls.
Please read the Newsgroups FAQ by "Eileen Stone" for more info on options,
and for info on a mod for registered WWIV Sysops where you can enable the
BBS to force callouts every so many hours rather than at least once a day.
Also, the Newsgroup FAQ has the info you will need to in order to set up
your BBS for Newsgroups.
The Newsgroups FAQ is also posted periodically by "Eileen Stone" on
the FILEnet Sysops sub, PPP Development/Support sub, and alt.bbs.wwiv.
