Shipbuilding centres of the Maritimes in the 19th Century.
This outline map of the maritime region gives some indication of the dispersion of ship-building. Almost every location that had a cove and a stream was capable of sustaining some sort of shipbuilding industry. The heavier concentrations on the south shore of Nova Scotia reflect the concentration on fisheries in that area. The relationship of ship-building to the fishing industry was a very close one. Saint John, with its great access to the interior via the Saint John River, was the leading shipbuilding centre for the region, though there were other locations that made ships as big as the Saint John builders did.
