Once the timber reached Saint John the logs were loaded onto great timber ships for transportation to the British Isles. During the summer shipping season as many as a dozen seagoing vessels would arrive in port on a single day to claim their cargoes of squared logs, deals and sawn lumber.
Employment was provided for hundreds of labourers in the loading and unloading of ships plying the timber trade.
