This lithograph shows the present condition of two houses in Wolfe Street, in what used to be the Quebec suburb. Houses like these, extremely rare nowadays, used to be very common in the working-class suburbs. Note also the similarity to rural housing in the St. Lawrence Valley. The houses were of wood and built piece by piece, large beams being placed one on top of the other to form the four sides, as shown in the illustration. It was not until the mid-nineteenth century that standard 2-inch by 4-inch planks, which were lighter, started to be used for the frame.
