On the right, mechanized compressed air drilling in the Le Roi Mine,1908. Compressed air drilling shows the relatively capital intensive and sophisticated technology of the larger mines. Other examples are electric locomotives for moving the ore cars underground, and the power hoists. Note however, the open candle lighting used by the miners. Open flames were possible because of the lack of explosive gas in the 'hard rock' mines.
