This photograph was taken in front of the Kindergarten of All People's Mission. Founded in 1892, this agency of the Methodist Church set out to close the gap between alien and native. J.S. Woodsworth was the superintendent of the Mission from 1907 and during his tenure did a great deal to assimilate the foreigner. Besides running a kindergarten, mission members visited immigrant homes, operated fresh-air camps, conducted night classes in English and "civics", visited hospitals, welcomed immigrants at the Federal Immigration Building, dispensed relief, and carried on numerous other activities.
