  5. Thanks for evaluating WebLine95 Web chatting software.  This document will
  6. walk you through the installation and usage of the WebLine95
  7. software.
  8.  
  9. Installation:
  10.  
  11. Run the SETUP.EXE file provided in the ZIP file you downloaded.  Choose a
  12. directory in which WebLine95 will reside.  WebLine95 will only take up a
  13. few megabytes of hard drive space when installed.  WebLine95 does not
  14. use any additional hard drive space to host the chat rooms unless logging is
  15. enabled.

  17. Select a port number as shown in the Server Setup tab.  Do not use port 80
  18. since your Web server will most likely be using that port.  I suggest
  19. that you create a page on your site that points at the main forum selection
  20. screen /WebLine95/.  For example if your site is http://www.xyz.com/SportsChattin
  21. then you can point a link to http://www.xyz.com:8001/WebLine95/ to bring up
  22. the main forum selection screen.

  24. Note:  I've had many questions from users who don't get the "Forum Selection" form
  25. right.  You MUST link to http://<your server>:<port number>/WebLine95/ to get the
  26. form. The link is case-sensitive, so you have to use "WebLine95" not
  27. "webline95" or "Webline95". You MUST also include the last "/" so if you ran
  28. a site shown above...you MUST link it to http://www.xyz.com:8001/WebLine95/
  29. (assuming that your site was www.xyz.com and that you chose the default
  30. port 8001).

  32. If you want to add a header or footer HTML section to the Forum Selection page,
  33. edit the provided MAIN1.HTM (the header) and MAIN2.HTM (the footer) files.
  34. You can, alternatively, create your own files but they must be named
  35. MAIN1.HTM and MAIN2.HTM.  You can specify where these files are located in the
  36. Server Setup property sheet.  Make sure that the directory path in which the HTML
  37. header and footer files are found is terminated with a "\".  (i.e. "c:\HTML\")
  38.  
  39. Additionally, if you want to create more forums, you can add them using the
  40. Forum Configuration property sheet.  Please note that the Main Forum is
  41. automatically added for you.  You may not delete the Main forum but you can
  42. add new ones as you like.  There is no limit on the number of forums you can
  43. host in the unlimited version of the WebLine95 software.  You MUST have at 
  44. least one Forum in your list for the program to work properly!  The MAIN 
  45. FORUM cannot be deleted.  Single forum versions will only allow the MAIN
  46. FORUM to be used.

  48. The Maximum Messages number shown on the Server Setup property sheet controls
  49. how many messages are stored in a forum at any one time during the operation
  50. of the server.  When a new user attaches to an active forum, this will be the
  51. number of messages that they will get (as forum history).  If you have an
  52. extremely active forum, you may want to increase this number, however you
  53. can probably get by with the default 25 as a good starting point.

  55. The Statistics property sheet will display the total number of connections
  56. since you started the server as well as the average connections per hour. The
  57. "visitors" count lets you monitor that actual number of people chatting in
  58. addition to the simple "hit" counts.  Current visitors are those people who
  59. are listed in chat forums at the moment, including those which have not timed
  60. out.

  62. The Beep on new connection checkbox is used to alert you when a new user has
  63. connected to your site.  You may want to enable this if you run a private
  64. chat site or an infrequently used chat site.  If your chat site is busy, you
  65. will probably want to deselect this check box since the beeps will be
  66. annoying.

  68. On-line statistics can be viewed by connecting to http://<your server>:<port>/Stats/
  69. Again...the "/Stats/" must be used EXACTLY as shown (case sensitive).  The
  70. statistics shown are the same as the property sheet on the application.  You
  71. may want to provide a URL link to the stats display for your users to impress
  72. them with the hit counts...

  74. You can temporarily shut off incoming users by toggling the File|Shutdown menu
  75. option.  When it is shutdown, users will not be able to chat.  This is only
  76. useful if you are trying to make changes on-line.

  78. The Restart Server option under the File menu allows you to rebuild the HTML
  79. header files and accept any new forums which have been added.

  82. home page as a chat site "Powered by WebLine95", please send my the URL to
  83. your chat site, the name of the site, and the general discussion content.
