Transcription: The first artificial satellite to orbit the Earth was Sputnik 1, launched by the Soviet Union in October 1957. The first successful U.S. satellite was Explorer 1, launched in January 1958. The first commercial uses of the space program were in communications satellites. The first of these, Telstar, was launched in 1962 and was designed and built by AT&T's Bell Laboratory.
