  36. The Berkeley Internet Name Domain (BIND) Server implements
  37. the DARPA Internet name server for the UNIX\(dg operating system.

  41. A name server is a network service that enables clients to name
  42. resources or objects and share this information with other objects
  43. in the network.  
  44. This in effect is a distributed data base system for 
  45. objects in a computer network.
  46. BIND is fully integrated into 4.3BSD network programs for use in storing and 
  47. retrieving host names and address.
  48. The system administrator can configure the system to use BIND
  49. as a replacement to the original host table lookup of information in the 
  50. network hosts file \fI/\|etc/\|hosts\fP.
  51. The default configuration for 4.3BSD uses BIND.
