Earthquake waves have very low frequencies, so you cannot hear them as they pass unless you are very close to the source. In order for you to hear them in this program, we have speeded the waves up by a factor of 16,000 times to put them in the audible range. Can you notice how the tone rises with time? That is because the low-frequency surface waves travel faster and therefore get to the station before the higher frequency surface waves.
