- For the Republicans of the day, I think it would depend on how you defined
- "support". At least one of the Republican party's founding precepts was an
- opposition to slavery (first its spread, then to abolition). The more con-
- servative members were willing to let slavery alone where it existed (this
- was Lincoln's postition--publicly stated, anyway--until the Proclamation
- following Antietam in 1862(3?)), but were vehemently opposed to allowing
- its spread.
