From the glossary of the Amiga Hardware Reference Manual:

Sprite  Easily movable graphics object that is produced by one of the eight
        sprite DMA channels and is independent of the playfield display.

There is a great amount of detail on sprites, the Copper, and Blitter in
this book. *Very* basically it is a graphics object that has hardware
devoted to it. This hardware has its own special section of memory and
and pre-empt CPU operations. This is significantly different than Mac
or PC set-ups and allows a M 68000 to do animation and sound that my ci
is envious of (I watch her drool).
Too bad the fantastic software for the Mac can't be combined with the
beautiful architecture of the Amiga.
