- Ooooooh, didn't mean to push a button by accident, especially around
- a holiday.
-
- I beg to differ, however, that a Blue Hole on Andros (or elsewhere) is
- irrelevant to "real" divers. I am certainly a real diver and, while
- I have swum the Blue Hole in question, I have not dived it. The dive
- has been described to me by an Andros resident who offered to escort
- me on the dive. At 60 feet, it's doable by relative novices. The offer
- to me was not unique.
-
- The Cousteau film series on Nova and elsewhere, it seems to me, has
- raised the awareness of many non-divers to the fragility of our
- water enivronment. As a professional biologist of sorts, I get
- asked numerous questions by tv viewers; as a professional diver of
- sorts, I get asked similar questions by tv-viewing divers. So,
- in a general way, I'd say, "Yes," Cousteau's films HAVE raised
- consciousness. And I've had divers under my supervision comment,
- "It's as beautiful as Cousteau's pictures" as they ride the boat
- back to shore. On the other hand, the only comment regularly heard after
- a dive in the brown-greens of a typical Midwest strip pit is, "Unnngh."
-
- Your main points, however, are excellent. We do inadvertently damage
- resources unthinkingly and the hydrogen sulfide layer is dangerous.
