- I found a 1967 paper by Raymond Stefanski, and am
- forwarding half of the introduction.
-
- Stefanski RA (1967) Utilization of the breeding territory
- in the black-capped chickadee. Condor 69:259-267
-
- "The fascination of Noble's (1939) definition of territory (i.e. any
- defended area) has conventionalized and limited thinking in this area of
- ornithology for the past several decades (Emlen 1957:352). The adherence
- to this definition resulted in an intensive search for a single function
- for all types of territoriality. Recent reviews (Hinde 1956, Kuroda 1960)
- have indicated a growing awareness of the futility of seeking a single
- explanation for this complex social behavior.
- The disagreement concerning the biological significance of
- territorial behavior stems partly from the lack of quantitative studies.
- This deficiency prompted Hinde (1956) to conclude that no real progress had
- been made in this area since Howard brought the concept of territoriality
- to the attention of ornithologists in 1920."
-
- What do list-member think? Have we made any progress since 1920?
- Based on the previous discussion of this list, I am not so sure.
- Maybe we just know less about more.
- Peace to all in the new year...............Michael
