  13. I had an interesting phone call from a prof of mine at the
  14. school I attended for my MA.  The school has a masters program
  15. that puts out experimental, couseling and school psychology
  16. majors.  The program is very strong in the areas of statistics
  17. and computers and to a lesser extent in basic research design,
  18. but has a definite behavorist bias. They're restructuring their
  19. program a bit and he's tryin to decide whether to add an upper
  20. level undergrad social psych course or some other course.  He
  21. asked me "Hey Betty, What's new and exciting in the
  22. field of social psychology?"
  23. Well... I didn't have a real good answer for him.
  24. I rambled a bit bout attitudes and persuasion eg the
  25. elaboration liklihood model, Chaiken's model; measurement
  26. issues in attitude behavior consistancy ala Fishbein & Ajzen,
  27. Epstein, Snyder & Ickes, Mischel, but I was a bit disappointed
  28. that I really couldn't make a strong case for the social
  29. psych course.  *shrug* now it's buggin me!  Does anyone out there in
  30. Psygradland have any better answers for him???

  32. He also asked. "Why should I teach a social psych course?
  33. Will that help prepare them for grad school better than
  34. some other course?"
  35. On this one I leaned toward measurement and methodology
  36. eg Fishbein & Ajzen, Epstein, Snyder & Ickes on measurement issues
  37. and Cronbach and Meehl, Campbell and Fiske on construct
  38. validity.  As I think this would better prepare people for PhD
  39. programs that a general social psych course would.  How
  40. would you respond to his question?
