- You are assuming here that everyone who reads Terry's work can speak
- some French --- a Euro-centric assumption. In parts of the U.S.
- Spanish is probably a more common language to have a smattering of.
- Those of us who are antipodean might know some French, or some German,
- or some Maori, or some Japanese, but not necessarily any more than one
- of these. My wife, for example, knows a bit of German, but the only
- words of French she is confident about are "Bonjour" and "Merci".

- This is similar to the English public school boy's assumption that
- everyone can speak some Latin. There are very few places in, for
- example, New Zealand where Latin is taught, and fewer where it is
- actually useful :-).
