- Despite heavy lobbying by Dan Quayle to have the definition of the term
- "wetland" redefined in such a way that would allow more of them to be
- filled in or otherwise developed, a senior official said yesterday that
- the Bush administration would not act to weaken the current regulations.
- The decision averted a final battle between environmentalists led by
- William Reilly, administrator of the EPA, and Our Boy, who has been
- leading efforts for two years to loosen the regulations.
-
- One can almost imagine the politics behind the decision: Bush - "OK
- Dan, I'll take the heat for the decision; after all I'm leaving office
- and Clinton would just reverse the policy anyway". Danny - "Great,
- then I get to save face as the guy who took the fight to the end".
