  88. The following info is contained on page 186 of this double-blind, 
  89. placebo-controlled trial of the efficacy of AZT:

  91. "The placebo was indistinguishable in appearance from AZT and was 
  92. similar in taste.  Drug therapy was temporarily discontinued or the 
  93. frequency of doses decreased to one capsule every eight hours or longer 
  94. is severe adverse reactions were noted.  The study medication was 
  95. withdrawn if unacceptable toxic effects or a neoplasm requiring therapy 
  96. developed.  Subjects in whom an opportunistic infection developed were 
  97. withdrawn from the study only if therapy with another experimental 
  98. medication was required or if antimicrobial therapy might have resulted 
  99. in serious additive toxic effects."

  101. My training was as a civil engineer, and I spent many years working with 
  102. statistical data concerning accidents on California's state highway.
  103. I am not impressed with the statistical information derived from the 
  104. above study.  Remember, it must be considered that the dosages were 
  105. decreased in individuals that had side effects or adverse reactions. 
  106. That action results in skewing of the data, and is certainly not kosher 
  107. in a double-blinded placebo controlled study.  Also, when preparing 
  108. results of studies and experiments for publication, you attempt to show 
  109. the data in the best light possible.

  119. compared to what it has actually accomplished.

  127. Is it really doing the very best it can do or is it doing the very best 
  128. it can depending on who pays for the research that leads to drugs and 
  129. treatments that can make the most profit.  The majority of AIDS victims 
  130. are Third World.  How many of the scientific community are developing 
  131. cheap, efficient treatments for these individuals?  No, it does not 
  132. imply that the scientists are *particularly* hard-heated, just that they 
  133. need money for research and to live.  The drug companies have the money 
  134. so that is where the scientists go.  I can guarantee that drug companies 
  135. are interested more in drugs that will realize profit than they are in 
  136. being *humanitarians* and providing non-profit making drugs to indigent 
  137. people.

  139. Do you really think that doctors and researchers are donating their time 
  140. and efforts in running the multitude of AZT + everything studies?  I 
  141. would surmise that Burroughs Wellcome is footing the bill and giving the 
  142. doctors and researchers something extra for their time and effort along 
  143. with *contributions* to proactive AIDS organizations that recommend BW 
  144. drugs.

  146. Now the focus of the research is shifting to the immune system and the 
  147. cell mediated immune response.  Salk has stated that an antibody vaccine 
  148. will not work as have many others.  There are now more and more 
  149. discussions about T8 cells, dendritic cells, NK cells and focusing on 
  150. treatments that will activate the immune system to fight off infections 
  151. rather than just focusing on destruction of the HIV virus.
  152.  
  153. I figured out the immune system focus a few months after I became 
  154. involved in AIDS.  Elswood, Epstein, Mills and others had a treatment 
  155. years ago that focused on activating the immune system to fight 
  156. microbial agents with DNCB.  
  157.  
  158. Why has it taken scientists 11 years to come to the same conclusion?  
  159. Why do you think a contact sensitizing agent like DNCB works?  Why don't 
  160. you check the literature about DNCB and activating the immune system?  
  161. There were articles over 20 years ago that used the cell mediated immune 
  162. system response and DNCB to control microbial agents and neoplasms.
