- MIDDLE LATITUDE AURORAL ACTIVITY WATCH
-
- ISSUED: 22:00 UT, 22 JULY
-
- /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
-
- VALID UNTIL: 19:00 UTC ON 24 JULY
-
- MODERATE RISK PERIOD: 22 - 23 July (UT days)
-
- POTENTIAL MAGNITUDE OF MIDDLE LATITUDE AURORAL ACTIVITY: LOW - MODERATE
-
- POTENTIAL LUNAR INTERFERENCE: LOW, BECOMING MODERATE AFTER LOCAL MIDNIGHT
-
- OVERALL OPPORTUNITY FOR OBSERVATIONS FROM MIDDLE LATITUDES: FAIR
-
- AURORAL ACTIVITY MAY BE OBSERVED APPROXIMATELY NORTH OF A LINE FROM...
-
- NORTHERN WASHINGTON STATE TO NORTHERN IDAHO TO CENTRAL OR SOUTHERN
- MONTANA TO NORTHERN SOUTH DAKOTA TO CENTRAL OR SOUTHERN MINNESOTA TO
- WISCONSIN TO MICHIGAN TO NEW YORK TO SOUTHERN MAINE AND POSSIBLY
- PARTS OF NEW HAMPSHIRE.
-
-
- SYNOPSIS...
-
- Auroral activity has increased in magnitude over the last six to twelve
- hours in response to a high speed solar wind stream emanating from a
- large and well placed solar coronal hole. The stream is expected to
- maintain present levels of auroral activity for approximately the next
- 24 to 36 hours before beginning to subside.
-
- Conditions will be moderately favorable for observations of auroral
- activity prior to moonrise near local midnight. Thereafter, lunar
- luminosity will begin to interfere and hamper attempts to view activity.
-
- Most of the activity should remain confined to the northerly middle and
- high latitude regions. Polar twilight over the high and polar latitudes
- will also hamper attempts to view activity over Northern Hemisphere
- regions. Other areas which may be able to spot activity under dark
- skies include southern Australia, southern New Zealand, the northern UK,
- northern areas of Europe and areas of northern Siberia.
-
- This is not expected to be a significant auroral event. No low latitude
- observations of activity are expected.
-
- This watch will remain active until 19Z on 24 July when it will either
- be updated or allowed to expire.
