-
- Pick is a an operating system built specially for business database
- applications. There is a robust, if relatively obscure, field of
- activity centering around this operating system, which derives its
- name from its inventor, Dick Pick and its vendor, Pick Systems of
- Irvine, California.
-
- There are many database functions built into the Pick operating
- system; I believe that the principal programming language in most
- Pick shops is a dialect of BASIC.
-
- Numerous computer vendors have been long-time supporters of Pick,
- including Prime, Data General, McDonnell-Douglas (via Reality),
- Sequoia Systems, Alpha Microsystems, General Automation, Encore,
- Applied Digital Data Systems (ADDS), and my own favorite vendor of
- fault-tolerant hardware, Stratus Computer. Recent additional support
- has been announced for the IBM RS/6000 and the AT&T Starserver.
- There is also a Pick implementation for IBM-PC-class machines.
-
- In addition to numerous Pick-centered trade shows that are held in
- various locations, there exists a trade newspaper for the Pick
- community, \News & Review/, and a professional journal, \The Pick
- User Digest/. Both of these are published by

-
- The National Prime Users Group (NPUG) has an active Pick section.
