- Barry,
- Although I am not a lawyer, I recently had a class on
- Law and Electrical Engineering here at Washington University.
-
- On your first question: The best place to find info on Copyright Registration
- for computer programs is in Circular 61 which is available from:
-
- Publications Section LM-455
- Copyright Office
- Library of Congress
- Washington, D.C. 20559
- or the Forms and Publications Hotline: 202-707-9100
- Questions on Copyright Information: 202-479-0700
-
- Also, Circular 1 covers the Copyright Basics.
-
- Basically, you do not have to register your work, but you can only
- seek damages for copyright infringment if your work is registered. You can
- put "Copyright 1992 John Doe" on your work since copyright protection begins
- when the software is created.
-
- If you are writing some software that has commercial possiblities, or may
- be the property of the univeristy, you should consult a qualified Patent/
- Copyright Attorney.
-
- The General Counsel there at your school may be able to help,
- but *generally* they don't have the expertise in this area, but they may
- know of a qualified attorney.
-
- Sorry, I can't help with question 2. Hope the above helps though!
