- Marie Coffin objects to the use of fraction to mean small
- fraction, for example, `Only a fraction of the cost.'
-
- Yes, well, that is a common objection to a common practice. But
- fraction means `a breaking' and was for some time a synonym of
- fracture. Fraction also meant something broken off, fragment,
- scrap, small piece, and was so used (in the early 17th century)
- by Shakespeare and has been used in that sense to this day.
-
- Not that historical precedent, use by respected authors, or
- anything else for that matter will stay those who object to
- this usage from the swift completion of their appointed
- rounds.
