In this column⑧ϕ} I will take a look at the new and old software available for your Atari 8-bit computer and give mini reviews of them as well⑧∈} as hints and tips and some of the behind the scenes 'secrets' of the software in question. Let me know via the editor what g⑧∩}ames you would like me to examine. I can't promise to know everything about any game but I do have a large collection (all or⑧≡}iginals!) and many contacts.¢¢I will give each piece of software a rating of between one and five stars but remember reviews ⑧±}are a personal thing and you may not agree with what I say (although I am yet to find anybody who thinks Frenesis is anything⑧≥} but total and utter !#$%). Okay no problem just write your own review and send it in, its always nice to have an alternate v⑧≤}iew on a topic.¢¢The five star rating is as follows:¢¢ * Not worth the steam off your tea, total !#$%, forget it ever exists.⑧⌠}¢¢ ** Nothing special, one for collectors.¢¢ *** Above average, well worth a look.¢¢ **** Top quality game, definately worth ⑧⌡}having.¢¢ ***** Super, amazing, brilliant, fantastic. Everybody should have a legal copy of it, if you don't you must be mad ⑧÷}or plain daft.¢¢¢Lets start off with Ace of Aces. This classy flight/fight simulator was supposed to be available on disk as ⑧≈}well as tape, but I never actually saw the disk version in the UK. Recently, however, it has been re-released on a ROM cartri⑧°}dge but at a rather high price. After US GOLD dumped the 8-bits KIXX re-released the tape version for 2.99, what a bargain! H⑧∙}owever there was a major problem, it took nearly half an hour to load!!!! In the media there were also conflicting reports of⑧·} not being able to restart a game once you had died. This is understandable, as the game will load into a 128k 8-bit machine ⑧√}and bank switch the required code in and out when needed so long as you press the START key on the pink, death march screen. ⑧ⁿ}This will obviously not work on machines with less than 128k of memory and you will be faced with waiting another 30 minutes ⑧²}for the thing to load in again! Those of you with a YORKY 256k memory upgrade will be pleased to hear it works fine with Ace ⑧³}of Aces. My thanks go to Dave Richardson the designer of the RAMBIT Turbo Tape system (who is still interested in supporting ⑧¯}the 8-bits - see his advert on this issue) for supplying me with this tip, he 'discovered' it whilst doing the Turbo conversi⑨}on of this game.¢¢The game itself has brill graphics and is very addictive. There is a wide variety of game options and it sh⑨⇧}ould keep you entertained for many a month, so long as you have access to a 128k+ machine to overcome that L O N G loading ti⑨⇩}me.¢¢          RATING ****¢¢¢How many of you out there don't have a copy of Ballblazer? I bet a few of you have a similar tit⑨⇨}led game Ballblaster lurking somewhere on one of your disks. Well in fact they are the same game, originally titled Ballblast⑨⇦}er it was pirated so much, it was decided to change the name for its actual release. This could have been one of those games ⑨❎}we will never see because of software pirates ripping it off even before it was released, however fortunately it wasn't and w⑨╱}e can enjoy one of the best two player games ever devised. Basically its a space age 'football' type game with fast scrolling⑨◆} graphics and neat spot sound effects. It is now available on ROM cartridge at a reasonable price. You can tell a game of cla⑨✓}ss generally by who programmed it, mention the name Zeppelin Games and we immediately think of Draconus and Zybex. It is a ge⑨    }nerally accepted fact that Zeppelin produced some of the best games ever to come out of the UK. Ballblazer and several other ⑨
}classy games (Rescue on Fractalus and Koronis Rift) came from Lucasfilm Ltd in the states. This company produced (and still p⑨♪}roduce) many excellent films including the Star Wars saga (by the way another film in this trilogy is due to be made within t⑨}he next three years or so, a long time to wait but hopefully it will be worth it) and is the driving force behind Industrial ⑨}Light And Magic, the guys who produce those spectacular special effects for films like Terminator 2 so its not surprising to ⑨}learn they produced such quality games back in the boom days of the 8-bit. My only tip for Ballblazer is make sure you sit on⑨} a stable chair and grasp your joystick firmly as you will soon be squirming all over trying to guide the ball into your oppo⑨⓪}nents goal.¢¢          RATING ****¢¢¢Well that's it for this time, not too many tips but hopefully you enjoyed it. Mmmm.....two minutes to get from Birmingham to Wolverhampton - not easy! Another brilliant one while wa!w}iting for a similar train. "Due to engineering works, the Birmingham to Aberystwyth train will today terminate at Wellington !x}Telford West". Well, thanks guys that's nowhere near where I want to be! The plan was, it turned out, that I had to get off t!y}here, get a bus to Shrewsbury, and then on another train to Aberystwyth. Try doing that with 5 boxes, a back pack, 3 carrier !z}bags, and a suitecase. Dedication or what?! D:M$✓¢¢The Net¢-------¢¢If you are a regular reader of the News-Disk, then no doubt you will have heard about the net. Dean often )ƒ}pulls things off the net in order to fill up the News-Disk, in fact some of the earlier issues of News-Disk were made up almo)á}st entirely of articles and letters taken from the net due to a serious lack of contributions from readers (come on, write an)í} article for the News-Disk, it isn't that difficult!). But how many of you actualy know what the net is?  If you have downloa)ó}ded this issue from the archive (or anywhere else for that matter) then you obviously do, but this article is mainly intended)ú} for all those subscribers who receive their copies of News-Disk on floppies, who probably don't know. Even if you do have ne)ñ}t access you might like to read on and hear about my experiences on the net concerning the Atari.¢¢I decided to write this ar)Ñ}ticle in order to share my experiences with the rest of you, since until a few months back I didn't know about the net either)ª}, but when I started University not so long ago, I was suddenly thrown into the middle of all this, all of a sudden I had Int)º}ernet access. I don't claim to be an expert on any of this, so there may be some mistakes in this text, therefore if I do mak)¿}e any mistakes then feel free to correct me!¢¢O.K. so what exactly is the net? Well, that is a very difficult question to ans)⌐}wer. Basicaly the net is a lot of computers all connected together in such a way that you can send information from any one o)¬}f them to any other one (in theory at least!). But the net isn't just that, if it were then it would be a very boring place. )½}The net is also made up of people, and it is the huge number of people on the net that make it a very interesting place indee)¼}d. When I mention computers here I'm not talking about micros (although you can gain access using a micro), I'm talking about)¡} huge mainframes.  Just to give you an idea of the size of these computers, let me tell you about the one that I have access )«}to: it is called Robin (after Robin Hood - well it is in Nottingham), and it has around 128 Megabytes of RAM connected to it,)»} which is a HUGE amount of memory.  Think of your Atari sitting in front of you, it probably has around 64 or 128K (maybe eve)ã}n 8 or 16K with a 400 or 800!) and this might seem like quite a lot of memory, but the think how big 128M is, that's 1000 tim)õ}es more than a 130XE!!! The processors in these computers also run very fast.  Robin runs at around 40 mips (mips=millions of)Ø} instructions per second), it is very difficult to compare the speed of these computers with a micro, but your Atari runs at )ø}around 2.178 Mhz (1.79 if it is an NTSC), that's over 2 million cycles a second.  The quickest machine code instruction takes)œ} up 2 machine cycles and the slowest takes 7.  Taking the worst case this gives around 311,000 instructions per second. Of co)Œ}urse it is not as simple as that and there are a lot of other factors involved, you can hardly compare the commands used in a)À} mainframe to those used by a 6502 Atari, but this should at least give you a feel for how big these computers really are. Th)Ã}en of course there's the hard disk space to consider, a mainframe can typicaly have a couple of Gigabytes worth of space on i)Õ}t 1G = 1,000M = 1,000,000K!!!! But mainframes have to be big since they have to be able to support several users conneted to )¨}them at the same time, and run loads of programs in parallel.¢¢¢e-mail¢------¢¢This was the first type of net access that I c)´}ame across and that I used. E-mail stands for electronic-mail and it allows you to send messages to other people at other pla)†}ces. I like to think of it as a kind of cross between a telephone call and a letter. It is as convenient as a letter, and alm)¶}ost as quick as a telephone call. If the person you are sending a message to happens to be logged on to their computer at tha)©}t particular time, then you could get an answer back in a couple of minutes, otherwise the message will be sitting there wait)®}ing for them next time they log on. The way it works is a bit like ordinary mail (often called snail-mail on the net). Each p)™}erson has a unique address which tells the computer who they are and where they are.  For example my address is [e-mail].a)ij}c.uk which means:¢¢rje  - my user name¢cs   - computer science¢nott - Nottingham¢ac   - academic¢uk   - United Kingdom¢¢If yo)IJ}u look elsewhere in this issue you might be able to find Dean's address as well [It's [e-mail] - Ed.], and you should )א}be able to see that it follows the same pattern as mine.  The mailing software can read this address and send it to the right)ב} person at the right place [sometimes!! - Ed.]. The interesting thing about e-mail, is that you can send mail to anybody else)ג} who has an access to e-mail as long as you know their address.  Even if they are on the other side of the world it is not un)ד}reasonable to expect an answer the next day.  This makes it easy to communicate with other Atarians world wide. In practice i)ה}t doesn't always run that smoothly, but you get the general idea.¢¢¢Newsnet¢-------¢¢So far all this has not had much to do w)ו}ith Atari, but this is where all that changes. The Newsnet is a bit like e-mail in that you can send messages and other such )ז}things to other people, but instead of going to just one person like e-mail does it goes to everybody who has access to Newsn)ח}et the world over. There are obviously a huge amount of messages sent, so the Newsnet is divided up into newsgroups, with eac)ט}h group concentrating on a particular subject. There are a massive number of newsgroups, covering just about every subject un)י}der the sun, and if it isn't there, and you can muster together enough support from other users, then you can probably start )כ}your own newsgroup. There are so many groups that it would be impossible for you to read them all (nor would you want to), ev)ל}en if you did nothing else for the rest of your life you still wouldn't be able to get through all of them [He's right! - Ed.)מ}]. What's more the groups are constantly updated as people post new messages all the time. Just to give you a taste of all th)נ}is, I'll describe which newsgroups I read (when I have time that is) in reverse order:¢¢alt.tv.red-drawf - which is all about)ס} the Red Drawf T.V. show on BBC2 and other related things.¢¢alt.fan.douglas-adams - which is about this author's book and oth)ע}er connected items (like towels and the number 42).¢¢rec.games.video.classic - for the Atari 2600, 5200 and 7800's¢¢but I've )פ}saved the best for last¢¢comp.sys.atari.8bit - which, of course, is all about the good old 8-bits.¢¢There are hundreds (thous)צ}ands?) of other newsgroups, and just listing them all would take up a major chunk of the News-Disk so I'm not even going to t)ק}ry. [A full listing is several inches thick of printer paper!! - Ed.].¢¢So what is discussed in comp.sys.atari.8bit?¢¢Well, j)ר}ust about anything concerning Atari 8-bits really, just take a look through past issues of News-Disk if you want a sample. An)ש}ything from Hardware to Software, upgrades, projects, etc.  And since anybody with full Newsnet access can post messages, it )ת}is a very interesting place. No matter what the subject is, chances are that there will be someone at the other end who knows)ן} something about it. Just think about it, lots of friendly people willing to help, all talking about Atari! There are even on)ך}e or two ex-Atari engineers who were around when the 8-bits were being built, who occasionaly chip in, as well as other 'impo)ם}rtant' people in the Atari scene. All in all very interesting.¢¢¢The Archive¢-----------¢¢But the fun doesn't end there. On t)ף}op of all this there is also the atari.archive, which is a computer where lots of Atari PD software and text about Atari are )ץ}stored. For example, all the issues of News-Disk are stored there. All this can then be transferred across to your computer a)§}nd downloaded and run on your Atari.¢¢The process involved is rather tricky, and you soon learn that Murphy rules supreme: 'i)∧}f anything can go wrong it will do'. To illustrate this point let me tell you about what happened when I tried to complete my)∞} collection of News-Disk (I was missing issues 3,4,5 and 6).¢¢Well, after a lot of help from Dean, via e-mail (and I do reall)α}y mean a Lot with a capital L - thanks Dean), I finally managed to understand most of the theory behind it all, and then it w)β}as just a case of putting it into practice. ¢Basicaly what you have to do is to first transfer whatever file you want to get )Γ}from the archive onto a PC, and despite the fact that the atari.archive is a few thousand miles away on the other side of the)π} Atlantic, this actualy turns out to be the easiest part of the process. Once you have got the file onto a PC, by using a pro)Σ}gram called UTIL, you can write the file onto a disk in Atari Double Density format, which can then be read on your Atari wit)σ}h a double density drive, however, in order to save memory and transfer time, the files tend to be compressed, so you also ne)µ}ed to have some way of uncompressing them on your Atari.¢¢With all this in mind I set out to try an accomplish my goal of com)τ}pleting my News-Disk collection. Dean very kindly sent me a copy of UTIL and a couple of programs to uncompress the files onc)Φ}e I had got them onto my Atari. So the first thing I do is to log onto the archive, the best time for doing this is during of)Θ}f-peak hours, to do it at weekends is probably the best idea. I actually managed to get in first time (which is not always th)Ω}e case, because there are only a limited number of connections, and it is not unusual to find that they are all busy), I then)δ} managed to successfully transfer issue 3 across onto the PC. I then saved a copy of this onto a PC formatted floppy disk so )∮}that if anything did happen to go wrong I always have a copy so that I can try again. Next I transferred UTIL over onto the P)ϕ}C, and that was where things started to go wrong, since despite the fact that Dean had told me it was VERY important to selec)∈}t a binary mode transfer, I forgot all about this. The result was that when I ran the program, the whole thing crashed, horri)∩}bly.  So now I have to find a way of re-starting the computer, then I realise that this PC hasn't got a RESET key, neither do)≡}es it have a BREAK key, and there is a sign on the wall saying "Do not under any circumstances switch the computers off".¢¢¢A)±}fter a trip to the enquiries desk, I discovered that to reset the PC you need to press the CONTOL, ALT and DELETE keys togthe)≥}r (now that is really logical - sarc). After that I managed to get UTIL onto the PC and run it successfully, and while I was )≤}at it I saved a copy onto a PC formatted disk, to save me the trouble of having to transfer it again (or so I thought at the )⌠}time). My next problem then was getting to grips with Util, the help screen isn't exactly very clear, but after some guess wo)⌡}rk and a lot of experimenting I got it to work! I then transferred issue 3 of News-Disk without any major problems, and the s)÷}ame goes for number 5. Number 4 gave me some trouble, since the PC disk upon which I had saved all the files I had transferre)≈}d across, including Util suddenly went bad on me, for apparantly no reason ('if anything can go wrong.....'), which meant tha)°}t I had to start again transferring UTIL across and downloading issue 4 again. However I got it in the end!¢¢But it was issue)∙} 6 that caused me the most problems. It just so happens that issue 6 is stored in a different format to the others, and this )·}was reflected in the extender used, all the other News-Disks were stored as .ARC files (i.e. ISSUE1.ARC, ISSUE2.ARC, etc), bu)√}t for some reason issue 6 was saved as ISSUE6.DCM. [Becuase the ARC file is bigger than the usual 64K Ramdisk on the Atari, s)ⁿ}o unarcing it would be a pain. Using Diskcomm would make it easier - Ed.]. I wondered a bit about this at first, but didn't t)²}hink too much of it.  However Dean had forgotten to tell me that in order to convert this file I needed to use a program call)³}ed DISKCOMM on my Atari rather than the UNARC program I had used for all of the other files. [You didn't ask me! - Ed.]. Well)¯} after a lot of head scratching I managed to work it out in the end, but that wasn't the end of it. For some reason UTIL kept*} on 'missing' sectors on the disk, so that when I had transferred the file onto an Atari disk there were half a dozen sectors*⇧} missing, I tried it again and the same thing happened, but with a different set of sectors.  In the end I made 4 copies of t*⇩}he file (that way I could make sure that I had at least one copy of each sector) and, by using a sector editor, I patched up *⇨}one good copy of the file. And so, after a lot of work, I was finally able to complete my collection of news-disk. [ Util is *⇦}an absolute pain to use. It's flakey at best, easily crashes, has no error trapping, misses sectors, and lots of other things*❎}! - Ed. ].¢¢Well I hope that you have enjoyed this article, all my experiences with these other computers have really made me*╱} appreciate my Atari all the more! The main reason for me writing this article was really to 'enlighten' those of you (who li*◆}ke me a few months back), didn't know anything about the net! Computers crash, comms lines die, mail goes into black holes and nev*}er comes out, news goes missing, newsfeeds die or keep news back for weeks, the archive can go down, or FTP links to the arch*}ive can die or act stupid, the BART system for file transfer doesn't really work properly, and never has!, and lots of other *}things!¢¢E-mail is usually the biggest pain. Mail can very easily bounce when going to some sites. This is usually the site a*}t the other end acting thick and pretending the user doesn't exist. You only have to type one character of the address wrong,*⓪} and it will bounce. Also, not all email addresses are as simple as Raphael's and mine. Some have % signs in, and these nearl*①}y always cause a pain. And if you're on an X400 line rather than X25 then you'll have a REALLY stupid looking address with lo*②}ts of numbers in it! Also, we have an added problem in the UK. We use the JANET network, which handles mail a little differen*③}tly to Internet. Our addresses are reversed, which won't work if you tried these from Internet. All just adds to the pain!¢¢F*④}TP links to the archive can also cause headaches. They rarely work well. The comms link over to the U.S. from the U.K is heav*⑤}ily congested with Internet traffic, and it is very slow and unreliable. You usually have to download things a few times to g*⑥}et a working version.¢¢The Newsnet is terrible in some UK sites. It can take weeks for messages to get to you. PAIN!¢¢Actuall*⑦}y, anyone with a modem can get onto Internet. There are some open phone connections on to JANET which allow you to connect on*⑧}to American systems such as Cleveland Freenet for free. One individual, Dean Garraghty has acquired the rights to sell s6e}ome PPP (Power Per Post - a German company) software. This includes the excellent Quick and S.A.M. (NOT Software Automatic Mo6f}uth) utilities and three new games Rubber Ball, Glaggs It! and Minesweeper, with hopefully more to come including a 3D versio6g}n of Pac-Man. Glaggs It! and Rubber Ball have actually been sold in the UK before (by Gralin International and Page 6 respect6h}ively) but at inflated prices. All the three games are available on disk only at 5pounds each or 12.50 for all three.¢¢That's6i} got the mundane bits out of the way, now let's look at Rubber Ball (RB from now on) in detail. RB is actually written in Qui6j}ck although Quick is not needed to run it as RB has been compiled into machine language. Therefore the boot procedure is the 6k}one for disabling BASIC, i.e. turn on whilst holding down option. After a short loading sequence you are greeted by a simple 6l}text screen with some catchy digitised music playing away in the background. Pressing the joystick trigger gets you into the 6m}action.¢¢Whats the game about?  Well you play the part of a rubber ball (hence the title) bouncing around the platforms tryin6n}g to collect the air-pumps. A joystick (in port 1) controls left and right movement but a (simulated) gravity is always pulli6o}ng you down, not forgetting collisions are never perfectly elastic your bouncing height decreases until you bounce no more, a6p}t which point you have to sit there until the timer decreases to zero or you can quit by pressing the fire button. It's a sil6q}ly key to choose as you could all too easily catch the fire button as you manoeuvre the joystick in a desparate attempt to ma6r}ke the ball go where you want it too. Falling from a platform will cause you to bounce more. As you bounce around, the highly6s} coloured platforms scroll very smoothly up and down. As you move around you must avoid various hazards such as pins which wi6t}ll rapidly end your life (you start each game with five lives). There are also other items such as airlifts and chewing gum b6u}ut I will leave it for you to discover how they work.¢¢Scoring is achieved by collecting the air-pumps and completing a level6v}, the quicker you complete the level the more points you get. A high score table is maintained and saved onto the disk (so yo6w}u can't write protect it), something I am not a great fan of, but I know some people like it.¢¢Overall the graphics are colou6x}rful and sharp with excellent scrolling, sonics are above average thanks to the digi music on the title page. The game play m6y}ay seam a little simple at first but you will quickly become addicted especially when you get onto the higher levels. Basically it allows you to copy Turbo BAS:}IC files from fast tape to disk or vice versa.¢¢To enable you to use it you must first format a blank disk using DOS 2.5 and :Ç}write the DOS files to it (option H). Then copy the file TAPEWIZ.OBJ from your News-Disk onto the blank disk. The file on the:ü} blank disk should then be renamed AUTORUN.SYS. This is then your TAPE WIZ! master disk.¢¢Then all you need to do is reboot y:é}our system with the TAPE WIZ! master disk in drive 1. This upgrade gave the 800XL 256K of RAM withoutFו} you even having to open up the computer. It did this by plugging into the 800XL's PBI socket. When the Atari started becominFז}g a minority computer, the Yorky upgrade disappeared. Or at least until earlier this year, when some investigative research bFח}y Richard Gore paid off.¢¢Richard is a student at York university, and he managed to find out that the Yorky upgrade was desiFט}gned and sold by a lecturer in York. A bit more poking around, and he found that lecturer!¢¢He also discovered that the guy hFי}as some parts left. Enough, in fact, to make a few complete units. He also has about 20 circuit boards ready for more to be mFכ}ade up.¢¢OK, so that's the history, now some details. Richard brought me one to review one sunny Sunday afternoon in June! HeFל}re's what I found.¢¢Cosmetics¢---------¢¢The Yorky upgrade is a large grey box with 2 cables coming out of it, along with a sFמ}witch. One cable is a ribbon cable to plug into the 800XL. The other is a power cable. The Yorky box needs power, so you actuFנ}ally plug your 800XL power supply into the Yorky box, and the power cable from the box into your 800XL. You then have to leavFע}e the 800XL's on/off switch permenantly on. This is because you use the switch on the box to turn the computer on and off.¢¢FFפ}itting¢-------¢¢One nice thing about the Yorky upgrade is that you don't have to open up your 800XL or do any soldering. The Fצ}box just plugs in the back of the 800XL. However, we had terrible difficulty in fitting one to my 800XL. It is very fiddly trFק}ying to get the cable into the PBI socket. Too much pressure would run the risk of damaging the cable or the computer. We hadFר} to bend the metal clasps above and below the PBI socket very slightly in order to get the cable to fit. But, once the box isFש} in there is no need to remove it again.¢¢Usage¢-----¢¢The switch on the box is more than an on/off switch. It's actually a 3Fת}-way switch. In the middle the computer is off. Push up for a standard 64K 800XL, and push down for a 256K 800XL. The 256K moFן}de is Newell compatible.¢¢Software¢--------¢¢As well as the box, you also get a disk of software supplied. The Yorky Support Fך}Disk contains a digi demo of ALF but using all 256K. You also get the 256K version of the MTOS software. You also get a graphFם}ics demo using page flips, and some other bits to take advantage of the extra RAM. This support disk is also available in theFף} PD from me as PD164. It is also useful if you have a 256K machine but not using Yorky.¢¢Manual¢------¢¢You also get a nicelyFץ} laid out manual, which describes how to fit and use the Yorky upgrade. The manual is nicely put together, but I spotted a feF§}w spelling and gramatical mistakes!¢¢Compatibility¢-------------¢¢The Yorky upgrade works with any software for 128K or 256K+F∧} machines. However, it is not fully 130XE compatible when using Antic mode. This may affect the running of some demos, but noF∞}t likely anything else. But, there is a way to make Yorky 130XE compatible, but this involves opening up your machine and doiFα}ng some soldering.¢¢The Yorky upgrade works fine with SuperDos 5.x, where you get a massive RAMdisk! It also works with SpartFβ}aDos 3.2d, but my SpartaDos X cartridge refused to acknowledge it! It also works OK with the Happy software. MyDos also worksFΓ} OK with it.¢¢Pricing and conclusions¢-----------------------¢¢The Yorky upgrade is great for those who want a 256K machine wFπ}ithout the need to open up their computer and start hacking it with a soldering iron!¢¢Yorky costs 50pounds + 2pounds P&P. ThFΣ}at will get you the box, manual and support disk. Stocks are severely limited, so first come first served!
