  230. Gideon announces Ultimate SuperCPU

  232. As club members will already know,
  233. Gideon, creator of the 1541 Ultimate +

  237. has announced: "There are indeed plans
  238. to create a SCPU image for the 1541U
  239. Hardware. That means: no hardware
  240. change, but a completely different
  241. behaviour of the cartridge.
  242.  
  243. The FPGA content would be different of
  244. course, offering you SCPU
  245. functionality. So *NO* built-in 1541,
  246. but just SCPU. [Of course the idea is
  247. that two 1541U's should work in a
  248. cart-expander, one as SCPU, one as
  249. 1541U.]"

  251. I'm not sure how a cartridge extender
  252. board would work, but then at least
  253. he's giving it a go, and it means that
  254. we don't need to hope for a SCPU to
  255. come along at less than $1000USD!!!
  256.  
  257. Also, from the club's point of view,
  258. as follows:

  260. "I've been speaking to Gideon about
  261. implementing a SuperCPU-compatible
  262. device; how he does this is up to him,
  263. and he is choosing to implement in
  264. within the U1541+, which is fairly
  265. sensible from his point of view. The
  266. suggestion was made back in the
  267. summer, and Gideon said that he wanted
  268. to wait until the Autumn, but would
  269. like to work with us as we had
  270. experienced SCPU users in our ranks.
  271.  
  272. Anyway, the Commodore Computer Club
  273. (UK) is working with Gideon and
  274. providing him with a SuperCPU
  275. initially, and will further provide
  276. him with a C128 + MMU so that he may
  277. observe how the MMU works, and how it
  278. allows the SCPU 128 to access the
  279. 128's modes. The first thing though is
  280. to get his implementation working in
  281. 64 mode. After he is satisfied, and we
  282. have something that basically does the
  283. same job, he can then look at further
  284. improvements to the hardware.

  286. He seemed reluctant at the idea of our
  287. offer of funding, as our club is not
  288. for profit. So, on that basis, we will
  289. simply pre-order these devices for our
  290. club shop. Some of these will be
  291. offered to programmers on the
  292. agreement that they actually create
  293. something useful, be it a game or
  294. application.

  296. Furthermore, we will be seeking
  297. agreement with the Ultimate New Comer
  298. team and Protovision to bundle
  299. authorised copies of UNC, Metal Dust
  300. and Virtual Assembler 16 with this
  301. device, which will make a nice bundle.
  302. UNC is being developed to take
  303. advantage of the SuperCPU by putting
  304. all of the game data into RAM, meaning
  305. no more disk swapping - It should also
  306. be just a little bit faster.
  307.  
  308. As this device will be available
  309. through our shop, member prices will
  310. be 10% less than non-member prices, in
  311. accordance with our club rules.

  313. Yes, we are aware that a SCPU
  314. implementation will not suit everyone
  315. out there.
  316.  
  317. Yes, we are aware that many people are
  318. happy with the 1541U+ in its current
  319. state, and will not want to upgrade
  320. that.

  322. Yes, we know that many programmers
  323. prefer 6502 over 65816.
  324.  
  325. And finally, we know that most C64
  326. fans/users don't want a SuperCPU.
  327.  
  328. But we are still backing this device
  329. because we know that many people would
  330. like to get hold of a SuperCPU without
  331. taking a chance on an auction.

  338. A few updates to add: I have agreed in
  339. principle that if this device is sold
  340. through the club shop, we can bundle
  341. UNC, Metal Dust and Virtual Ass 16
  342. with the device. I hope also to speak
  343. to Stephen Judd to include his apps in
  344. any such bundle. Indeed, it might be
  345. handy to have Jammon built into the
  346. USCPU+ firmware especially if Gideon
  347. finds a way of implementing an Action
  348. Replay style 'freeze' function which
  349. would allow access to the ML Monitor
  350. for debugging purposes. Let's not get
  351. ahead of ourselves though - first
  352. thing is to get it working & compatible

  372. can't say too much but I have been in
  373. contact with Mark Fellows and there is
  374. a person that is interested in taking
  375. over the CMD C= distribution, Mark is
  376. aware of Maurice's bad Behaviour and
  377. is doing something about this.

  379. COMMODORE FREE: Well its all fingers
  380. crossed at the moment, I may receive
  381. my SCPU or a refund but I don't want
  382. to hold by breath because I will quite
  383. probably die from lack of oxygen.

  401. to share them with you. Even without
  402. disassembling, the contents are very
  403. interesting. You can see the built-in
  404. applications and BASIC 3.6 (U103).
  405. BASIC 3.6 looks like it has the same
