  7.        INTRODUCTION
  8.  
  9.        WinXs for Windows  is  a  shareware  program  that  provides
  10.        UNIX-like  tool  functionality  under Windows 95, Windows 98
  11.        and Windows NT 4.0.  To run WinXs, you will need a 486-based
  12.        PC (or later), at least 8mb of main memory and approximately
  13.        5.25mb of disk space to install the software.

  17.        WinXs for Windows is a suite of programs that  brings  Unix-
  18.        style tool functionality to the Windows platform.  This ver-
  19.        sion of the program runs on Windows 95, Windows 98  or  Win-
  20.        dows NT 4.0, and consists of a series of 50 popular file and
  21.        text utility  commands  and  utility  applets.   Access  and
  22.        implement  them  using  the  menu  bar  in  the Windows File
  23.        Manager (Windows 95/98 only), or the Explorer  and  Taskbar.
  24.        The  distribution  includes  cat,  cksum,  cmp,  col,  comm,
  25.        compress, cp, csplit, cut, dd, df, diff,  dircmp,  dos2unix,
  26.        du, expand, file, find, fmt, fold, grep, hd, head, join, ls,
  27.        man, more, mv, nl, od, paste, pax, pg, pr, rm,  sdiff,  sed,
  28.        sort,  split,  strings,  tail,  tee,  touch, tr, uncompress,
  29.        uniq, unix2dos, uuencode, uudecode, wc,  whence,  xargs  and
  30.        others.  See the file "winxs.txt" for more information.

  32.        INSTALLING WINXS

  34.        WinXs is distributed either as a free-standing .EXE file  or
  35.        as  a  .ZIP  archive.   If you have the former, run the .EXE
  36.        file and proceed  to  step  3  below.   Otherwise,  you  can
  37.        install WinXs from a .ZIP file as follows:

  39.          1.  If you have WinZip on your system, open the  ZIP  file
  40.              containing  the WinXs distribution (e.g., winxs32.zip)
  41.              and double-click the WinXs .EXE file (winxs32.exe).

  43.          2.  If you do not have WinZip on your  system,  unzip  the
  44.              WinXs  distribution file (e.g., winxs32.zip) to a tem-
  45.              porary directory and then run the WinXs .EXE file from
  46.              File Manager or Explorer.  Delete the temporary direc-
  47.              tory and its contents when the  installation  is  com-
  48.              plete.

  50.          3.  Run the WinXs Shell  by  double-clicking  the  desktop
  51.              icon  created  by  the  installation program.  Further
  52.              configuration options are made available by  selecting
  53.              the Configure option on the File menu.

  57.        Windows NT.  Because the WinXs setup  program  modifies  the
  58.        registry, you must logon as the Administrator to install the
  59.        product, and whenever you want to modify  the  configuration
  60.        via File | Configure.

  62.        UNINSTALLATION

  64.        To uninstall WinXs from your system do the following:

  66.          1.  From File  Manager  or  Explorer,  locate  your  WinXs
  67.              installation   folder   and   double-click   the  file
  68.              setup.exe.  Select Uninstall in the  resulting  dialog
  69.              box.

  71.          2.  From Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove  Programs,
  72.              select  WinXs  in  the  list of installed software and
  73.              click Add/Remove.

  75.        LICENSE
  76.  
  77.        WinXs is a shareware program.  It can be used for  a  period
  78.        of  up  to  30  days  free of charge, after which it must be
  79.        removed from your system or a license  fee  of  $30  dollars
  80.        U.S.  must  be  paid.   See  the file README.TXT for further
  81.        details.
