  36. 1   INTRODUCTION
  37.  
  38. The purpose of these release notes is to:
  39.  
  40. *  Inform you how long you may continue to use this
  41.    release of Novell Replication Services
  42.  
  43. *  Provide information on planning for, installing and
  44.    running Novell Replication Services
  45.  
  46. *  Provide critical information supplementary to the
  47.    formal documentation set
  48.   
  49. 2   LICENCE FOR USE
  50.  
  51. This is a trial version of Novell Replication Services and it is
  52. released to allow you to access the software and use it freely for a
  53. limited period. The LICENCE FOR THIS TRIAL VERSION WILL EXPIRE ON
  54. December 31, 1997, and after this date you will be unable to use this
  55. release of this product.  If you know you are going to be using this
  56. version of Novell Replication Services in the production environment
  57. on or after this expiration date, you should upgrade to the fully
  58. licensed version of the product before the expiration date.

  65. 3   PLANNING FOR INSTALLATION - SERVER REQUIREMENTS
  66.  
  67. Each server to which or from which you want to replicate 
  68. data must be configured as follows before you install 
  69. Novell Replication Services on that server.
  70.  
  71. 3.1 Software and Protocols
  72.  
  73.     The server must already be running the following:
  74.  
  75.         IntranetWare (or NetWare 4.10 and above)
  76.   
  77.         Modular CLIB 
  78.         Version 4.11h and onwards are recommended. 
  79.         You can download a version (LIBUPD) 
  80.         from http://support.novell.com/search/patlst.htm
  81.  
  82.     The server must also be part of the same Novell 
  83.     Directory Services (NDS) tree as the other servers to 
  84.     which or from which file system objects are to be 
  85.     replicated. This restriction exists to allow security 
  86.     across the entire network of master and replica servers. 
  87.     Because all servers are part of the same tree, NDS can 
  88.     authenticate access and prevent unauthorized actions to 
  89.     replicated file system objects using the same Access 
  90.     Control Lists on every server.
  91.     Servers running Novell Replication Services can be 
  92.     connected by any transport protocol currently supported 
  93.     by the NetWare operating system.
  94.  
  95. 3.2 Disk Space and Memory
  96.  
  97.     Novell Replication Services requires the following:
  98.  
  99.     Disk space
  100.       a) 2 MB of space in volume SYS: for each 1,000
  101.          replicated file system objects.
  102.       b) Adequate space on the replica file servers for the 
  103.          contents of files being replicated. 
  104.  
  105.     Memory
  106.       a) 2 MB of available memory on every server. Master 
  107.          servers require approximately 1 MB of additional 
  108.          memory, compared with replica servers, to allow 
  109.          for simultaneous synchronization.
  110.       b) 1 KB for each object in the single largest directory,
  111.          but not including objects in descendants of that
  112.          directory.

  114. 3.3 Running Novell Replication Services from NetWare 4.10
  115.  
  116. If you are planning to run Novell Replication Services
  117. from NetWare 4.10, be mindful of the following.
  118.  
  119. a) You are advised to install the most recent version the
  120.    NetWare Administrator utility.  You can download the appropriate 
  121.    patch from http://support.novell.com/search/patlst.htm.
  122.    
  123. b) We STRONGLY RECOMMEND that you use dedicated replication 
  124.    servers. This will avoid any situations in which performance 
  125.    of older applications might be impaired because of 
  126.    incompatibility with the CLIB version recommended for 
  127.    Novell Replication Services.

  130. 4  UPGRADING FROM A PREVIOUS RELEASE
  131.  
  132. Perform the following steps if you are upgrading
  133. from any Beta or EAR version of Novell Replication Services. 
  134.  
  135. i)   Remove any line in the AUTOEXEC.NCF file that 
  136.      sets a search path to a directory that used to 
  137.      contain Novell Replication Services. It could 
  138.      look like this "SEARCH ADD SYS:SYSTEM\NRS".
  139.  
  140. ii)  To reduce disk usage on the server, remove the old 
  141.      Novell Replication Services files by deleting the 
  142.      directory that they were stored in. This is most easily 
  143.      done from the Explorer (Windows 95) or File Manager 
  144.      (Windows 3.x). If the files were stored in the SYS:SYSTEM
  145.      directory, then they will be overwritten during any 
  146.      future installation.

  149. 5  DOWNLOADING NOVELL REPLICATION SERVICES FROM THE WEB
  150.  
  151. The following steps provide the recommended procedure
  152. for downloading the Novell Replication Services software
  153. from the Novell Web page.
  154.  
  155. i)    Create a working directory on your computer, 
  156.       for example <NRS>.
  157. ii)   Locate the Web page where you found this README file.
  158. iii)  Click on Download nrsv1.exe.
  159. iv)   Select <NRS>.
  160. v)    Run nrsv1.exe to expand component files.
  161. vi)   Copy <NRS> to volume SYS: on the server where
  162.       you intend to install Novell Replication Services.
  163.  
  164.       You are now ready to install Novell Replication
  165.       Services.
  166.

  168. 6  INSTALLING AND RUNNING NOVELL REPLICATION SERVICES
  169.  
  170. Instructions for installing and running Novell Replication Services
  171. are provided in Chapter 3 of the " Novell Replication Services
  172. Administrator's Guide."  However, we recommend that you consult the
  173. entire Guide in some detail before installing Novell Replication
  174. Services and planning its use within your organisation. 
  175.  
  176. Section 7 below tells you how to access the online version of the 
  177. "Novell Replication Services Administrator's Guide."
  178.  
  179. Information is also available from the
  180. Help file (NRSADMIN.HLP).   This is installed at:
  181.    for Windows 95
  182.      SYS:PUBLIC\WIN95\NLS\ENGLISH\NRSADMIN.HLP
  183.    for Windows 3.x
  184.      SYS:PUBLIC\NLS\ENGLISH\NRSADMIN.HLP

  186. You will find that there is some overlap of material between the
  187. contents of the Guide and Help.   As a general rule, however,
  188. you are advised to
  189. a) Use the Guide for planning and reference
  190. b) Use Help for operational issues.

  193. 7   INSTALLING AND ACCESSING THE ONLINE DOCUMENTATION
  194.  
  195. 7.1 DYNATEXT VIEWER OPTION
  196.  
  197.     The "Administrator's Guide to Novell Replication Services" is
  198.     in DynaText form.   You have the choice of downloading either:
  199.       a) The Guide only (if you already have a viewer); or
  200.       b) The Guide, and a DynaText viewer.
  201.  
  202.     You will find the online Guide under the Web page entry 
  203.     entitled "Novell Replication Services v1.0 Dynatext Manuals."
  204.  
  205. 7.2 LOCALIZED VERSIONS
  206.  
  207.     The "Administrator's Guide to Novell Replication Services" is
  208.     available in the following localized versions:
  209.       French
  210.       German
  211.       Italian
  212.       Portuguese
  213.       Spanish.
  214.     However, the localized versions do not incorporate a DynaText
  215.     Viewer.   If you require a localized version and a DynaText
  216.     Viewer, you should:
  217.       a) Download the localized version required
  218.       b) Download the English version with Viewer, to obtain the
  219.          viewer.   You can then discard the English version of the
  220.          Guide.

  224. 8   SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION
  225.  
  226. The following specific points supplement documentation
  227. provided in the "Administrator's Guide to Novell
  228. Replication Services" and Help.
  229.  
  230. 8.1 INSTALLATION AND CLIB
  231.  
  232.     The software provided for Novell Replication Services 
  233.     Version 1.0 DOES NOT include any version of CLIB 
  234.     (see 3.1 Software and Protocols above).
  235.  
  236. 8.2 DISK SPACE AND MEMORY
  237.  
  238.     For disk space and memory requirements for servers,
  239.     see section 3.2 of this README file and DO NOT refer
  240.     to the section headed 'Server Requirements' in the 
  241.     "Novell Replication Services Administrator's Guide." 
  242.  
  243. 8.3 RENAMING VOLUMES
  244.  
  245.     Once you have finalized your replication set, you must
  246.     not subsequently rename any volume on any master or replica
  247.     server within the replication set.
  248.  
  249. 8.4 'MAXIMUM SERVICE PROCESSES'
  250.  
  251.     The setting for 'Maximum Service Processes' for a
  252.     master or link server (which is set through SERVMAN under
  253.     'Miscellaneous') should be a value at least three times the 
  254.     number of replica servers.   A default IntranetWare(tm) 
  255.     installation will therefore support 16 simultaneously 
  256.     synchronizing replicas.

  258. 8.5 ADMINISTERING NOVELL REPLICATION SERVICES FROM A WINDOWS NT CLIENT
  259.  
  260.     Since the Windows 95 version of NetWare Administrator is 
  261.     not generally supported on a Windows NT client, we do not 
  262.     recommend that you attempt to administer Novell Replication 
  263.     Services from a Windows NT client.
