  3. Thank you for your interest in Help Magician Pro 95!

  5. You have a demo of one of the best help authoring tools
  6. on the market for creating Windows help files and
  7. Internet Web pages from your help files.
  8.  
  9. Being a demo version, we've disabled certain features
  10. in Help Magician such as spell checking, rtf importing,
  11. html exporting, limited project management features, and
  12. limited the demo to 25 help topics. The demo version
  13. also does not include the clipart library, nor the
  14. opening.wav and sp05.avi file for demo95 source, or
  15. some executables and the website demonstration.

  17. We attempted to make this demo as small as possible so
  18. it can be downloaded off the web (thus a lot of stuff has
  19. been left out). You can request our "Help Magician Pro 95
  20. Demo and Hypertext Tools CDROM", which is packed full of
  21. clipart, midi files, WinHelp Add-ons, and Help Magician Pro
  22. 95 demo in its entirety.

  25. view the purchase.hlp file for information on how to
  26. unlock the demo so you can get started right away.

  28. We suggest that you run the Help Wizard from within Help
  29. Magician's Help Menu and let it give you an introduction

  34. (for Windows 95 users), and \WEBDEMO (to show a sample
  35. of a help file converted to a web site).

  44.                       HTML Support

  47. The manual was written before the completion of the
  48. HTML support in Help Magician.  There have been quite a
  49. few changes since the manual was published.  Refer to
  50. the online help file for documentation on the HTML
  51. support.  We've included a Website demo in the \WEBDEMO
  52. subdirectory to show how a sample website can be done.
  53. This demo shows an early version of our website
  54. currently at www.sinterphase.com. You will need Windows
  55. 95 to see the WEBSITE.HLP file.

  63. We've included a collection of clipart images that you
  64. can use in your help file or web site.  They are located
  65. in the \CLIPART directory.

  70.          Using 256-color Bitmaps in Windows 3.1
  71. ********************************************************

  73. You have two options for using 256 color bitmaps:
  74.  
  75. 1)  Help Magician Pro includes a DLL that allows WinHelp
  76. for Windows 3.1 to display 256 color bitmaps. The Help
  77. Magician Installation program installs this DLL to your
  78. Windows directory. When you make a HLP file, you need to
  79. distribute the HMEW2.DLL file to your customers.  You
  80. must make sure it gets installed in their Windows
  81. directory.  Also, you must distribute all the 256-color
  82. .bmps with the .hlp file and install them in the same
  83. directory as the .hlp file.  If you don't do any of the
  84. above, WinHelp will display the message "Unable to
  85. display picture" when showing a 256-color bitmap.  You
  86. may distribute the HMEW2.DLL royalty-free.  Windows 95
  87. supports high color bitmaps without the need for this
  88. DLL or distributing the bitmap files.

  90. 2)  Use the HC505.EXE help compiler in place of the
  91. HC31.EXE help compiler.  It has a few quirks, so we
  92. recommend you completely check out your help file. This
  93. compile supports 256-color images directly without the
  94. need for HMEW2.DLL or including your .bmp files.

  98.                       Images and Memory

  101. There are three methods that can be used to represent
  102. images in the editor.
  103.  
  104. Display Image
  105. Stores the image in memory and in the HLX file. This
  106. method uses the most memory and disk space but provides
  107. the fastest display of the image in the editor.
  108.  
  109. Display Filename
  110. Stores the filename only in memory and in the HLX file.
  111. This method uses the least memory and disk space of all
  112. the display options.
  113.  
  114. Link to File
  115. Stores only the image filename in memory and in the HLX
  116. but displays the image in the editor. This method is a
  117. compromise between the two methods described above.

  119. After installation, the system defaults to Link to File.
  120. This can be changed at any time in the Environment
  121. Options form, available from the Options menu.

  126.                    Backup Source Files

  129. The Help Magician will keep previous versions of the
  130. source (.HLX) for your help system depending on the
  131. setting on the File Save tab in the Environment Options
  132. form. After installation the system defaults to two files
  133. but this can be changed at any time in the Environment
  134. Options form, available from the Options menu.  The
  135. extensions for the backups are from .H01 to .H10.

  140.                Special Font

  143. A special font has been installed on your system for use
  144. with the Help Magician's Macro Editor. In the font
  145. selection dialog, it will be listed as:

  150. Windows for this font to be available.

  158. The Help Magician automates the use of audio (.WAV), midi
  159. (.MID), video (.AVI), and movie (.MMM) files in your help
  160. system using the standard WinHelp engine, supplied with 
  161. Microsoft Windows 3.1.  Windows 95 Help supports
  162. multimedia directly.
