SPEED READ v2.00 June 16, 1995
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
New features include:
* Implemented user-defined popup menus. Menus can call other menus, return
key codes for SPEED to execute and execute DOS commands. SPEED can even
double as a basic menu/shell program when started with the /#MENU command
line argument. Popup menus now allow you to select an item by pressing a
highlighted letter.
* Added support for several replaceable #variables#. The case of #variables#
is determined by the first letter of the #variable#. For example, #bbs_#
would return "Lunatic" while #BBS_# would return "LUNATIC".
* Reply field in the message header that displays the date when you replied
to the displayed message and a replied flag (√) in the message (I)ndex.
* Support for long conference names (15 characters in real-mode, 31
characters in protected-mode). To see the full conference name press
(F10) from the conference list window.
* Conference and BBS specific user-defined headers and signatures.
* Scrolling ANSI for messages, news, file list, bulletins, session, etc.
* Increased number of taglines (limited only by available memory).
* Increased the maximum message size to 64k bytes and 1,000 lines (2,000
lines in protected-mode).
* Picklist search field now allows '*' and '?' wildcards.
* Option to automatically backup a message base before importing a new packet.
* Increased the width of the conference number from 4 to 5 digits.
* Added /NOWAIT command line argument for registered users to bypass the
"Press Enter..." message on the openning screen.
* Better error handling, including:
- Corrupt QWK packets are now renamed as QWK.ERR.
- /DEBUG mode no longer writes to the screen. Instead it writes to a
file DEBUG.LOG in the SPEED directory.
- Error messages are automatically written to the file ERROR.LOG.
* When there are no new QWKs waiting to be imported, (+) and (-) will move to
the next/previous BBS with personal messages.
* Added toggle to make $REPLY.SR blank when replying to a message.
* Added toggle to mark twits as *KILL*.
* Full initials are parsed from the From: field and used in the quote string
when replying to Internet Email.
* SPEED will now read the CONTROLNAME from DOOR.ID.
* When the Symbolic language toggle is On, high-bit characters (>126) no
longer trigger the display as quote flag.
* The "Forwarded Message" and "Carbon Copy" headers are now user-defined and
stored in the FORWARD.SR and CARBON.SR files, respectively.
* Ability to include or exclude certain characters when SPEED determines if a
line is a quote.
* A protected-mode version of SPEED READ (SRP.EXE) is available for
registered users. Due to compiler-specific bugs, it is not being released
as shareware until the compiler vendor corrects the problems. For many
users, the necessary tweaking to make SRP work on their system is more than
offset by the benefits gained. Including:
- Virtually unlimited conferences.
- Virtually unlimited messages in a conference.
- 31 character conference names.
- 2,000 lines per message.
- Ability to use disk space as virtual memory.
* Fixed the "growing" message problem when adding a new QWK packet or pruning
an existing conference or folder with a message larger than 10,000 bytes.
This should virtually eliminate the ever-popular "Dynamic Block Error".
* Plus many more, too numerous to mention here...
