Thanks for downloading THE TEMPEST, an adventure game based (very loosely)
on the play of the same name by Shakespeare.
To run the game, just type TEMPEST and press ENTER.
This is my first attempt at an adventure game, and I would be grateful
for any comments or feedback. In particular, I find it hard to know if
I've made the game too easy, or too hard. I suspect that for hard-bitten
experienced adventurers, the game is far too easy.
Please send any comments to:

several days or a week before I respond.
DON'T SEND ME MESSAGES ASKING FOR HINTS!!
=========================================
That's why I included the program HINTBOOK with this package. To use
this program, which works very much like the hintbooks that can be bought
for Infocom adventures, type: HINTBOOK TEMPEST and press ENTER.
You are then asked for the name (which doesn't have to be the full name)
of a room, object or creature you need a hint about. The program will
check that it has the right thing by asking you:
"Do you mean the (room/object/creature) XXXXX? Y/N".
For example, if you wanted a hint on, say, a telescope, you could type in
just SCOPE, and the program might respond by asking:
Do you mean the object SCIENTIFIC MICROSCOPE? Y/N (to which you'd reply N)
Do you mean the object ASTRONOMICAL TELESCOPE? Y/N (to which you'd reply Y)
If there were hints for this object, the program would then give you the
first hint, and then ask you if you wanted the next hint for the object.
Hints get stronger as you go. It's advisable for getting the most fun
out of the adventure just to take one hint at a time, try to get beyond
that point in the game, and only if still completely stumped come back to
HINTBOOK and progress to the next hint. If you just sit and read all
the hints for all the rooms and objects, you might as well not bother
playing the game - there will be no challenge.
