  5. ++Introduction
  6.  
  7. I wrote Starbase for my son, when he was 10 years old.  The game is
  8. based on Missile Command, that runs on the Macintosh.  Starbase is a
  9. simple game that younger children (3-10) will enjoy.  Even adults might 
  10. find it relaxing, occasionally.  It teaches kids Windows concepts like 
  11. pull down menus and dialog boxes, and it builds eye-hand coordination.  
  12. Most importantly, though, it is fun.

  14. ++Installation
  15.  
  16. Copy STARBASE.EXE and WIN87EM.EXE from the floppy disk to the Windows 
  17. directory on your hard disk.
  18.  
  19. ++Play
  20.  
  21. From the MS-DOS Excecutive, double click on STARBASE.EXE to execute 
  22. Starbase.  When the Starbase window appears, you are ready to play.  
  23.  
  24. Along the bottom of the main window you will see a group of boxes, which 
  25. are supposed to be buildings.  The three ellipses supported by legs are 
  26. "laser cannons" that protect the starbase.  The score, energy level, and 
  27. number of missiles destroyed are shown below the main window.  The 
  28. cursor will be a "gunsight" when it is in the main Starbase window.

  30. Select a skill level from the "Skill" menu.  Then, select "Start" from 
  31. the Game menu.  Hostile aliens begin attacking with "quantam disruptor" 
  32. missiles.   The missiles with vapor trails will begin to fall from the 
  33. sky.  Your job is to save the starbase by destroying them before they 
  34. land and explode.  You do this by positioning your gunsight over a 
  35. missile and pushing the mouse button to fire the nearest laser cannon.  
  36. Do this as fast as you can to avoid being decimated by the aliens.  Good 
  37. luck!

  39. ++Automatic Mode

  41. Starbase will run by itself as an idle program if you select "Automatic" 
  42. from the "Game" menu.  This is very useful to keep your computer out of 
  43. trouble when you aren't using it.  You can play in automatic mode, but 
  44. Starbase won't notify you when the game is over.  It just starts a new 
  45. one.

  54. Starbase is copyrighted "shareware" software.  Besides the many hours of 
  55. work that went into Starbase, a lot of expensive hardware and software 
  56. was required to develop it.  Please copy  it and distribute it to your 
  57. friends, enemies, and anyone else who might like it.  You can try out 
  58. Starbase for free.  If you use it more than just to try it out, you are 
  59. obligated to pay a minimal fee, $10, for it.   Send payment to:
