  2. SPECIAL BOOT PARAMETERS
  3.  
  4. On a few systems, you may need to specify a parameter at the boot:
  5. prompt in order to boot the system. For example, Linux may not be able
  6. to "autodetect" your hardware, and you will need to explicitly specify
  7. its location or type for it to be recognized. The table below
  8. indicates whether you need a parameter. If you do, enter the boot
  9. method followed by the parameter from the table. For example, if your
  10. 3.5 inch floppy drive is your second drive, and your first drive is a
  11. 5.25 inch one, you would type "linux root=/dev/fd1" at the boot:
  12. prompt.

  15. IBM PS/1 or ValuePoint (IDE disk)      hd=<cylinders>,<heads>,<sectors>
  16. IBM ThinkPad                           floppy=thinkpad

  18. Press <F5> for more information about special boot parameters for
  19. various hardware devices.
