Games tried 'n' tested
Document d05/13 AjC
=============================================================================
This document details all games tested with Desktop Hacker by its author,
and any unusual bits of games which can cause confusion when hacking. Many
are not problems with Desktop Hacker as such, but you should be aware of
them. If you find a game that won't hack or produces unexpected results, and
it isn't documented here, please send a report to DoggySoft.
* 2067BC. OK
* 6502Em. OK
(ie. you can hack BBC games by hacking the emulator!)
* Aggressor. OK
* Aldebaran. OK
* Alone in the Dark. OK
* Arcade Soccer. OK
* Arcturus. OK
* Asylum. OK
* Axis.
This game has silly protection on to stop you from using games hackers.
You can always use the cheat module.
* Battle Chess. OK
* Big Bang. OK
* Black Angel. OK
* Blood Sport. OK
* Bloxed. OK
You need to reserve some memory, at least on the newer version 1.09.
* Blitz. OK
* Blowpipe. OK
* Bug Hunter. OK
* Bug Hunter in Space. OK
* Cannon Fodder.
You can only hack during the score and map screens. So to hack it, click
on 'Map', then press the hot-keys.
* Caverns. OK
* Chocks Away. OK
* Chuck Rock. OK
* The Crystal Maze. OK
* Cycloids. ?
The original Software 42 release hacks OK. It had protection on, but a
recent fix to Desktop Hacker has (accidentally) got round this. The Games-
Ware re-release has not been tested, but has a new protection system on.
It might work.
* DarkWood. OK
But don't drag !DarkWood to Desktop Hacker. Instead, shift-double-click
on !DarkWood and drag !RunGame to dHacker.
* The Dungeon. OK
* Demon's Lair. OK
* Diggers. ?
Reports suggest you should only interrupt whilst in the actual game-playing
bit (not title screens etc.), else the desktop goes funny and unusable.
* Doom. OK
* Dune II. OK
You will need to reserve some memory.
* Dragon Ball. OK
* Elite. OK
* Empire Soccer. OK
* Fervour. OK
Remember the game only starts when you run the levels directory at the
start - so drag that, not the !Fervour application, to Desktop Hacker.
* Firebolt. OK
* Flashback. OK
* Formula Two Thousand. OK
* FRED. ?
See Cycloids.
* Galactic Dan. OK
* Gameboy. OK
* GODS. OK
* Greivous Bodily 'Arm. OK
* Gribbly's Day Out. OK
* Guile. OK
* Hamsters. OK
* Haunted House. OK
* Hopper. OK
* Hedz. OK
* Heimdall. OK
* JSW. OK
* Lemmings 2.
Hacks perfectly outside the main game screen. Otherwise hacks OK, but
during interrupt, the keyboard is disabled, and the hard disc won't work.
You can get round this by typing any numbers (into the search window, for
example), at another screen, then interrupting and performing the search.
Other strange things happen to the time whilst interrupting - buttons don't
slab in, and Desktop Hacker's auto-scrolling scroll bars eat the pointer.
Take care with this game. It does lots of horrid things.
* Mad Professor Mariarti. OK
* Magnetoids.
The demo hacks fine; the full version does not. I have no idea why this is,
and I'm looking into it.
* Magic Pockets. OK
* Moon Dash. OK
* Nebulus. OK
* Oddball.
Going back to the game after an interrupt causes one of this game's support
modules to stop the game with an error. You can blot out Amnesia's service
entry point if you know how. The next version will delink all modules
loaded from disc as well those loaded from RAM.
* Paradroid 2000. OK
* Phaethon. OK
* Populous. OK
* Premier Manager. OK
* Quark.
Doesn't work. I'm not sure quite why, but it has always caused problems,
and it won't work on the Risc PC, so it's hard to fix now.
* RedShift. OK
Hacks fine, but sets the mouse multipliers to 0 so that the mouse pointer
will not move (in fact the ship graphic is the mouse pointer!) and you
can't operate the desktop. To replace the mouse multipliers, press F12,
*Basic, and enter "MOUSE STEP 3" and "QUIT".
* Repton 2.
Doesn't work. Apparently. Don't know why.
* Revolver. OK
* Rick Dangerous. OK
* Sally and Wally. OK
* Sega emulator. OK
But crashes on return to desktop. Reason unknown, possibly mode-related.
* Sensible Soccer. OK
See Zool. However, Renegade have obviously noticed that the ScreenBlanker
can lose the colours, and have helpfully provided a key to redraw the
colours, which you can use after Desktop Hacker. It's Space.
* Sim City. OK
* Simon the Sorceror. OK
* Small. OK
This game's memory set-up sequence complains if it can't shrink the font
cache to 0K, even if it doesn't need the memory. To get around this, either
make so no applications are using outline fonts, or run the FontSafe
application in the Extras archive, which stops games faffing with your
font cache.
* Super Pool. OK
* Speedball 2. OK
* Spheres of Chaos. OK
* Star Fighter 3000.
Crashes or doesn't interrupt, due to an interesting 'feature' in the
protection module. I recommend getting a deprotected version, since the
protection module also stops the game loading on newer hardware and is
generally a pain in the butt.
* Stunt Racer 2000. ?
I seem to remember it not working - crashing when you ran it with Desktop
Hacker (which I thought was something to do with the protection system).
It works fine on my Risc PC now, using 'Game On!' to get it to run at all.
* Styx. OK
* Super Foul Egg. OK
* Swiv. OK
* Terramex. OK
* Tertis.
Doesn't work, apparently.
* The Time Machine. OK
* Top Banana. OK
* Tower of Babel. OK
* Twin World. OK
* Wavelength. OK
* Wolfenstein 3D. OK
You will need to reserve some memory.
* Xenon 2. OK
* Z80Em. OK
But brings up an error on return to the desktop due to sloppy mode
restoring.
* Zool. OK
Hacks fine, but on returning the screen will be all black, so you can't see
what's happening (the same happens if the ScreenBlanker cuts in). You will
either have to get killed or find a bonus that makes the screen flash to
restore the colours. Or use the ZoolPatch raster bars program.
