Subject: Gladless news from VAAP
Dear Frank,
We would like to return to an issue we didn't refer to for quite a while.
We thoroughly investigated all aspects of publishing your book in the Soviet
Union. With regard to the latest changes in Soviet economy and management
the situation is as follows. VAAP has withdrawn from the project due to its
own difficulties mainly of a financial nature. Nauka publishers do not have
convertable currency available therefore we greatly doubt that it will be
able to sign a contract with Digital Press directly. Under the circumstances
and because we would like to see your book published in the Soviet Union we
suggest Digital Press to consider the possibility of publishing the book on
a non-profit basis, i.e. through an educational institution or university or
us, ICSTI. The number of copies in this case will be not more than 3-5
thousand. We are fully aware of the necessity to sign a contract with
a nominal fee John Osborn from Digital mentioned earlier. We would like
to know the idea of this fee to start working on this matter right away.
We understand the news are rather gloomy but we see a light of hope in
the distance.
The tapes you asked about have not arrived yet.
- Marina, Konstantin, Juri.
