- Internet Explorer 1.5 beta (Preliminary Evaluation Version)
-
- Overview
-
- Internet Explorer 1.5 beta is an early release primarily intended for
- Windows 3.1/3.11 and WFW 3.1/3.1 users who are connected to a
- local area network (LAN). This product will allow you to browse
- and view HTML documents on the network, as well as documents on
- the world wide web or Internet provided your network is connected to
- the Internet. Other services, such as Gopher and FTP, are also
- available.
-
- If you are not on a LAN, but have an existing TCP/IP connection, a
- dialer and an account with an Internet service provider (ISP)
- you can also use this product. Instructions for installing Internet
- Explorer 1.5 on your system are provided below. Also, future
- versions of Internet Explorer will include all the software you
- need to establish new accounts (TCP/IP protocol stack, dialer
- and ISP account registration software).
-
-
- Supports:
-
- Microsoft Windows 3.1 or 3.11
- Microsoft Windows for Workgroups 3.1 or 3.11
- Microsoft Windows NT 3.51
-
- Requirements:
-
- Win 32s libraries (Not required for Windows NT 3.51)
-
- Internet Explorer 1.5 is a 32 bit application. In order to run this
- software on Microsoft Windows 3.1x or Microsoft Windows for
- Workgroups 3.1x, which are 16 bit operating systems, you must
- install Win 32s version 1.30A or later. If you have already installed
- Win 32s for use with other applications, you can check the version
- number in the Win32s.ini file located in your \windows\system
- directory. If you are running Windows for Workgroups, start File
- Manager and select the win32s16.dll file in your \windows\system
- directory. Press File | Properties from your menu bar to view the
- version number. If you do not have Win 32s installed, it is
- available for download at:
-
- http://www.microsoft.com/kb/faq/devtools/winsdk/win32sdk/q1.htm or
- ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/softlib/mslfiles/pw1118.exe.
-
- TCP/IP Stack & Dialer (Included with Windows NT 3.51)
-
- A TCP/IP network protocol stack and a dialer (often referred to as
- winsock.dll) are required to access the internet through an ISP. As
- mentioned above, this version of the Internet Explorer requires that
- these components be installed before running the Internet Explorer.
-
- If you are accessing the internet through a LAN or simply browsing your
- internal network (intranet) your network administrator can provide you
- with the appropriate version of winsock.dll.
-
- Installation Instructions:
-
- 1. Create a temporary directory on you computer.
- 2. Download the Internet Explorer and place MSIE15.EXE in the
- temporary directory
- 3. Run MSIE15.EXE file from File Manager to extract the program
- files.
- 4. Read the instructions below for LAN installations and for installing
- with existing TCP/IP connections.
- 5. Run Setup.exe from File Manager. Setup will install the following
- directory and files in the directory you specify:
-
- backgrnd.gif
- client.gif
- home.htm
- space.gif
- basic.dll
- iexplore.cnt
- iexplore.exe
- iexplore.hlp
- ra.dll
- raplayer.exe
- raplayer.gid
- raplayer.hlp
- ratask.exe
-
- 6. You may delete the temporary directory you created and its
- contents if desired.
- 7. Run Internet Explorer
-
- Your feedback on this beta product is appreciated! You can send
- comments using the HTML page located at
- http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie_beta.htm.
-
- LAN Installations
-
- Upon completing the steps outlined above you should be ready to use
- Internet Explorer over your LAN. If you encounter any problems consult
- with your network administrator. He/she can check to ensure that your
- PATH in autoexec.bat is configured so that you are using the
- appropriate winsock.dll.
-
- Proxy servers may also be used provided they are CERN compliant.
- To enable use of a proxy server select View | Set Proxy Server and
- check the Use Proxy Server control. Next, enter the proxy server
- name in the location provided.
-
- Installation with Existing TCP/IP Connections and ISP Accounts
-
- Internet Explorer has been installed and tested with several of the
- most popular Internet access products available today. If configured
- properly you should be able to use the TCP/IP stack and dialer
- (via winsock.dll) provided with these products to connect with
- your ISP.
-
- In general, all that is required is that you configure your PATH
- command in autoexec.bat so that Internet Explorer can find the
- winsock.dll file you are using to connect to the internet. For
- example, if your winsock.dll is in the directory C:\CONNECT, you
- would modify the path to read PATH=C:\CONNECT.
-
- Below we have included procedures for installing Internet
- Explorer over some common internet access products. Other
- packages available include FTP Software, Network TeleSystems and
- shareware from Trumpet Software
- (http://www.trumpet.com.au/wsk/winsock.htm).
-
- (Note: Instructions below require that you have already
- installed Win 32s.)
-
- Internet Chameleon 4.5
-
- 1. Install Internet Explorer to the suggested default directory
- (C:\IEXPLORE)
- 2. Ensure that the Internet Chameleon directory is in your path. If
- it is, add it to the PATH statement in C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT and reboot
- your system.
- 3. Run the Internet Chameleon dialer application (icon called Custom),
- select the line corresponding to your current Internet Service
- Provider, and ensure that the "Dial on Demand" option is set
- (menu option Setup/Dial on Demand). This will make the dialer
- application run when the Internet Explorer tries to connect
- to the Internet.
-
- Running
-
- Start the Internet Explorer application by clicking on the
- "Microsoft Internet Explorer" icon in Program Manager.
-
- If you have configured the Chameleon dialer to dial on demand, an
- Internet connection will be made when you first enter an Internet
- address in Internet Explorer.
-
- If you have not configured the Chameleon dialer to dial on demand,
- you will need to start that application before starting Internet
- Explorer.
-
- Netscape Navigator 1.2 Personal Edition
-
- 1. Install Internet Explorer to the directory which contains your
- Netscape Navigator files. For instance, if you installed the
- Netscape browser in the default directory (C:\NETSCAPE) place the
- Internet Explorer files in the same location.
- 2. Run Internet Explorer
