When you install Writer's Workshop, you must identify a network folder for the Writer's Workshop by using the "Network Folder that Contains the WWNET1 Folder" part of the installer (WWNET1 is used for Workshop 1 and WWNET2 is used for Workshop 2). If you do not have a Local Area Network, you should choose a location on your workstation. What this does is make your standalone machine a network of one. The zone at the lower left of the installer window (illustrated above) allows you to select this network folder.
• If you installing for the first time, you must tell the installer where you want to put the network files. The Installer will copy the necessary files to this location and write this information into the EOWWW Preferences folder.
• For subsequent installations, you must locate the network folder that already contains the WWNET1 folder so the installer can write its location into the EOWWW Preferences folder; otherwise, the program will not know where the network folder is. Do not select the WWNET1 folder itself; this will create another "WWNET1" folder inside it.
Note: If this pointer to the network folder is damaged or lost, you can re-install, or you can create this pointer yourself. In the EOWWW Prefs folder (in your Preferences folder) is an alias named "workshop 1 alias." If you need to, you can open your fileserver, make an alias to the WWNET1 folder, and put it into your EOWWW Prefs folder, renaming it to "workshop 1 alias"— this is exactly what the Installer does.
Before Installing—Security Issues
If you are installing Writer's Workshop resources to a real Local Area Network location, you should be aware of the following network security issues. In order to be able to create folders and files on a fileserver, you need to have the proper security from AppleShare. In some sites, the network fileserver is open to all users; elsewhere, it is heavily guarded.
If your situation is wide-open, then you can proceed with installation.
If you have a tightly-administered fileserver, you should observe the following steps:
1. Decide if you can put the WWNET1 folder directly on the root of the fileserver, or if you have to create a special area for your work. In many sites, the English department has a folder for its work, the Math one for its work, etc, and the various departments do not have security access to the other departments' spaces.
2. If you can put the WWNET1 folder directly on the root of the fileserver, then you can skip to #4.
3. If not, either identify or create a folder into which you can install the Writer's Workshop. You will probably have to be logged on to AppleShare as a high-level user to do this.
4. Run SETUP to install the program to the location specified in step 2 or 3.
5. When you perform subsequent installations, you should connect to your fileserver NOT as a high-level user, but as the normal AppleShare user that will be using the computer on a daily basis. Many sites automatically connect their workstations as "Station 1" or some other suitably generic name.
The reason this is important lies in the nature of the Installation and of the pointer from the workstation to the fileserver. In the section above, you can read about the Alias file that the Writer's Workshop uses to find the fileserver. This alias is quite powerful, since it will automatically attach the user to the desired fileserver when the Writer's Workshop is run, even if that user wasn't attached already. If you install the Workstation items while you're attached to a fileserver as an Administrator, this Alias file will connect subsequent users as Administrators, too.
To avoid this problem, first run SETUP while you're attached to your fileserver as an Administrator. Reattach to the fileserver as a normal, day-to-day user, and run SETUP again. This way, the alias to the server will contain the proper AppleShare information. For subsequent workstations, you will only need to install once, since you will have already created the necessary network folders.
Password Protection
The installer is protected by a password. This password can be found in the Teacher's Manual; it is the first two words of the third line in the second column on page 57. Please type the words exactly as they appear in print, including capitalization (if any).
Easy Install vs. Custom Install
For most installations, you can rely on the "Easy Install" option, which comes up by default. This option will install Local Area Network files, Workstation files, and System elements.
Switching to Custom Install allows you to choose from two options: System Elements, and Workshop files.
• The System option checks to see if you have Quicktime 2.1 installed in your System Folder. If you have an older version, or you have no version of Quicktime, the installer will automatically copy the files necessary to run the program to the correct location, and will suggest that you restart your computer after it's finished. If you know that you already have QuickTime 2.1, then you can omit this option.
• The WorkShop option copies files to the fileserver, files needed to enable login, communication, and document management. It also installs all the Writer's Workshop program files to your computer's hard disk, as well as information necessary for the program to be able to locate the network folder.
